Preserving menus across a split "episode" disc

Using CloneDVD 2.0.4.1, I have come across an interesting "feature" when trying to preserve menus across a split "episode" disc.

The disc in question is Father Ted Series 1, with episodes 1 - 6 appearing in titles 3 - 8. So I could keep both audio tracks and quality I wanted to create a split disc with 3 eps on each.

Firstly selected titles 3, 4 and 5 and checked preserve menus. This disc worked fine. When I clicked in the menus for the episodes 1,2 and 3 off I went to the correct one. Clicking 4, 5 or 6 sent me back to the menu, a neat solution that works fine.

For the next disc selected titles 6,7 and 8 and checked preserve menus. What I expected was clicking for episode 1,2 and 3 to take me back to the menu ( as per the previous disc ), but I get taken to episode 5 each time. I should say the clicks for eps 5,6 and 7 take me to the correct show.

There don't seem to be any options or right-click functions that can change this behaviour.

Anyone else had similar experience ?

TIA,

I imagine that this is a design feature (working as intended).

Simply because they decided that it would make more sense that any menu links refering to a previous title (lower number) should refer to the first title on the disc.

Ie. They always want a "play episode 1" on a disc to actually do something.

It may also be necessary to confirm to some sort of disc organization standards.

Or it could just be a feature of how players themselves handle missing menu items.

Either way, it doesn't sound like too much of an issue? Seems like a design that makes a certain sense ("Leave menu links pointing After the titles 'empty", but "Make any menu links pointing before the titles 'point' to the first title").

Your only alternative, if this is absolutely not the way you want it, would be to re-author the menu for the disc. That way you can organize (or even remove) the links that are "missing". I'm not sure how much work that is (ie. would it require additional modification of the whole disc, or just the menu file(s)).

I imagine that all but the most trivial of "menu" changes require alot of processing.

Hope that helps

Assuming you mean that clicks for eps 4, 5 and 6 take you to the correct show, there is an easy workaround for this.

1. Write the files to hard disk.
2. Use MenuEdit to deselect the buttons that allow one to choose eps 1, 2 and 3. Now you have a DVD that takes you to the correct episodes and precludes any confusion.
3. Burn the files on your hard disk to DVD-R.

My experience is that you SHOULD have been taken right back to the menu when choosing eps 1, 2 or 3, because that's how CloneDVD treats other removed titles....

Thanks for the replies.

I'm definitely going to have a play with menuedit and see how I get on, but yes, I am being a bit obsessed about this
