Help with burning problem

Hello all,

I don't know if this should be in the CloneDVD or AnyDVD forum, but I'm gonna try here. I was able to back up DVD's without a problem for a few weeks. Everything worked perfectly! Then I went ahead and purchased CloneDVD2, AnyDVD, and CloneCD. Since that point (I belive) or shortly after I go ahead and have AnyDVD open, and then chose to clone a DVD with CloneDVD2. It does everything, just like normal. Completes the burn. Then I put the burned DVD into my computer and an error message comes up:

AnyDVD:

Warning!
Failed to read DVD!
This could happen for several reasons:
1. -DVD Media is dirty
2. -DVD Media is damaged - you will have to replace it.
3. -Your drive is a region locked RPC2 drive, which does not allow reading of scrambled sectors from a different region and you try to read a DVD from a different region. Know drives having this problem and RICOH/PHILIPS DVD Writers and Matshita/Panasonic DVD readers and writers. You can try to find a RPC1 patched firmware at http://www.rpc1.com
4. -Your drive is an RPC2 drive that has not yet been assigned a Region. Try to assign one, or try to find a RPC1 patched firmware at http://www.rpc1.com

Then it allows me to play the DVD with Power DVD (or Windows Media, or anything). However, it will play one to four minutes, then freeze for awhile, then run, then freeze. The same thing happens when I put it in any DVD player connected to a TV.

Any thoughts? I haven't changed any settings at all on CloneDVD2 or AnyDVD. It worked perfectly for a long time then stopped. I had updated CloneDVD2 and AnyDVD to the newest versions, and thought that may be the problem so I unistalled and then reinstalled the older versions I have (AnyDVD 4.6.3.1 and CloneDVD 2.7.5.1) but still got the same problem.

Thanks

Re: Help with burning problem

what brand and model are your burner

what firmware do you have installed

what kind of media are you using. Please include media ID and rated speed. (media ID can be identified with Nero CD-DVD Speed on the Disc info Tab)

what speed did you burn the media at?

without any info my guess is either poor quality media or too high of a burn speed, but please provide the above info in this (and any subsequent new posts) so myself and others can try to help you.

Re: Help with burning problem

Well, now I kinda feel like a dummy right now. I have two different types of disks.

I have HP Invent dvd+r 8x. Media ID CMC MAG E01. I also have some blank, non discript DVD's that have a Media ID of YiJhan 001. They have a max write speed of 4x. Now, I've burned with both before with no problems. Then I started getting the problems. I tried both, and got the problem with both. But today I tried the HP one again, and burned a movie with no problems at all...

Just so maybe you can help me out for the future, I usually click "Maximum preferred" for burn speed. Will clicking 4x or 2x-4x help with these no name disks?

My DVD drives are:

AOPEN 16XDVD-ROM/AMH [DVD Drive]
ATAPI DVD DD 2X16X4X16 [DVD Burner]

I don't know how to find the firmware.

Thanks a bunch.

Re: Help with burning problem

i wouldn't use the "maximum" setting on clonedvd. I'm not familiar with your drives, and I don't think your media is all that high quality.

some people like cmc and have good luck with it, others (like myself) don't work with it.

the cmc are going to be personal perference and hwo they work out for you. here are some comments on the yi jhan media i found from videohelp.com/dvdmedia http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.ph...=1309#comments

your firmware can be identified using nero infotool. check what version is installed then check the manufacturer of your drive's website to see if there have been any updates since the version you have. Updating your firmware often adds or improves support for more kinds of media increasing your "luck" with successful burns.

check for firmware updates and then try burning with the cmc media at it's rated speed as opposed to "maximum" and pop that back into your drive and anydvd *should* read it.

I'm fairly confident that your problem was a combination of my initial guesses: burn speed and media quality.

you can search this forum for NUMEROUS discussions/debates on what the "best" media is. Taiyo yudens are generally accepted as very high quality Verbatim discs (with MCC media IDs) are very good for most burners.

Re: Help with burning problem

ok so after some poking around, it turns out your burner is a rebadged BenQ 1620 (a very good burner)

I suggest you poke around in the BenQ subforum under optical drives on this site to decide whether you want to flash the firmware to a benQ. This means you will ultimately own a BenQ drive.

Crossflashing firmware like that has its downsides as if you do it wrong, you risk killing the drive. Crossflashing automatically voids your warranty as well. Please read up about the BenQ1620 and about crossflashing before attempting this.

in the mean time this site http://www.iomagic.com/Firmware/FirmwareDownload.html contains your latest firmware. scroll towards the bottom until you find your drive (ATAPI DVD DD 2x16x4x16) and you can download the manufacturer's latest recommended firmware as well as instructions (in the box to teh right of the f/w)
