Good Burns But No Movie... Help!!

I am at the point of total pannick trying to get a good burn that I can view. I have a Sony DRU-720A Burner and I'm using clone DVD 2.8.4.1 with AnyDVD5.2.6.1 with DVD+R 4x media. I have read other post and tried burning with the DVD5 and DVD-R DL booktype at 4x speed and still get nothing. I have used DMA enabled and disabled with no change. I am totally out of Ideas and would welcome any help because I am tired of making coasters.

Funny statement "Good Burns But No Movie... Help!!"
If it was a good burn you'd have the movie.

Kidding aside, some more details are needed.
Firstly, don't attempt to burn a DVD-DL with Clonedvd, it will only burn DVD+ DL.

Is this a new burner or have you had successful DVD burns in the past?
Did you make any changes to the original firmware?

"I can get a movie to write to my hard drive with Clone DVD2 just not my media."

After you do a burn using DVD5 in CloneDVD, did you check to see if the files were in fact on the disk?

Did you try to play in back both on your PC and stand alone player with failed results?

Answer these questions then we can attempt to find a solution to your problem.

Re: Good Burns But No Movie... Help!!

Yeah, I guess you were right about the good burns line but at that point I was looking for some kind of small victory. Ha Ha

Is this a new burner or have you had successful DVD burns in the past?
Did you make any changes to the original firmware?

I originally got my 1st dvd to burn with an earlier trial version of clone dvd and this is my 1st and only DVD Burner. Also I have an SE version of Nero that came with the burner installed on my system.

After you do a burn using DVD5 in CloneDVD, did you check to see if the files were in fact on the disk?

No, When I attempted to view the disk contents in explorer it did not see the disk and only gave me a drive not ready error.

Did you try to play in back both on your PC and stand alone player with failed results?
Yes, I tried to play it back on the PC but it will not recognize the dvd as being present.
I also tried it on my stand alone DVD player and get a bad disk error that appears on my TV screen.

I hope this sheds a little light on the problem and thanks for helping.

Re: Good Burns But No Movie... Help!!

A long shot, but I hope this will help.
I have had problems with CloneDvd2 reporting that it has successfully made an iso to my hard drive, but in reality, there is only an empty file present, (with the file name there, as selected when I set up the burn).
I found that this problem was induced by using the drive speed control feature within AnyDvd, and having Nero Drive Speed installed on my system at the same time.
Right clicking the drive speed control box in AnyDvd warns not to use in conjunction with other drive control programs.
I didn't have Nero Drive Speed running alongside AnyDvd, but there was a conflict between them, that went away when I disabled the drive control feature within AnyDvd.
Your mention of having Nero installed on your machine brought this to mind, as drive speed is incorporated into Nero Se.

Re: Good Burns But No Movie... Help!!

Falcn44,
The information you provided was helpfull.
You stated "I originally got my 1st dvd to burn with an earlier trial version of clone dvd and this is my 1st and only DVD Burner."
Have you done anything differently when your first burn was a success?
With this I mean have you added any software or changed any settings in AnyDVD and CloneDVD. Leave AnyDVD set to the defaults and do not enable speed control.

Since you say you have Nero installed, check and make sure you have no packet writing along with it such as InCD, if InCD is installed, uninstall it, it will cause problems.

When you put a store bought DVD into the drive and open up Windows Explorer, does Explorer recognize the drive and the files on the DVD, and will it play on the PC?
Just checking to see if Windows is recognizing the drive. I assume it is because you went through the motions of copying the DVD, only it appears it did not burn.

As sockeye mentioned, did you select the correct tab under the output method, it should be DVD/Writer, not DVD Files or ISO/UDF Image?

There is a possibility your burner is defective so we need to troubleshoot this as quickly as possible if you are a candidate to RMA the drive.

Re: Good Burns But No Movie... Help!!

@ Falcn44,

Perchance using a software utility similar to DVDInfo Pro (http://www.dvdinfopro.com) could you provide the Manufacture ID and Media Code of the DVD media you are using and the present firmware version installed in your Sony DRU-720A (LiteOn-SHOW-1673S) DVD burner. The Manufacture ID/Media Code of your DVD media and your DVD Burner Firmware is important information in troubleshooting your current problem.

Also suggest visiting SlySoft (http://www.slysoft.com) and downloading the latest versions of AnyDVD and CloneDVD. The versions of AnyDVD-CloneDVD that you listed in your initial posting in this thread are outdated.

Best Regards,
bjkg

Re: Good Burns But No Movie... Help!!

I checked an found no Nero packets running in the background. I also at the suggestion of you and Sockeye made sure the speed control on Anydvd was disabled. I then went to the sony support site and upgraded my firmware for the drive to the latest revision. Started CloneDVD2 again making sure the output method was set on DVD Writer as it has been. Watched as it had no problems reading the original disk followed by the prompt for me to insert blank media which I did. Wait as it went through the process of writing to the disk (Light On). After about 20 minutes it said the burn was successful at that time I tried to play it and once again nothing. I again tried to view it in explorer and got no disk errors again. I can turn the disk over and see that it physically burned something on the disk but will not let me see it.

Store bought DVD's will show up in explorer on this drive and I can play them also from this drive. I have had no problem burning regular CD's with this drive too.

I was trying a different tactic, since every CloneDVD/AnyDVD problem is met with the immediate "Try DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter," and we've had this discussion many times now.

"Try DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter" is not helpful. I believe your intentions were good. The first step with programs paid for[assuming] is not "try something else." I completely understand trying something else in order to determine if the hardware is working, but that would have to be something specificly mentioned in your post.

How about: "have you tried other programs (like dvd shrink...) and did they work for you?"
Or this would be fine: "If you suspect software is the issue, and you want to make sure your burner works, why not test it with these free programs..."

As for "classless;" Welcome to the internet. That was being courteous, I could have insulted you directly using profanity like some people.

Falcn44,
If after updating to latest of Clone and AnyDVD does not solve your problem I would RMA that drive ASAP.
I know you said that the CD's work fine, however, with these DVD/CD combo units there are separate lasers for the DVD and CD's. I feel that your DVD laser is shot.

Ah, I didn't know that! That may very well be the case but I surely hope not. I will try the newest versions of both and then make my decision. Thanks for all your help....

The very best of luck to you.
If the unit is very new you may still be able to RMA it if you bought it online, or return to place of purchase if bought retail. If that time has expired, just send it back to Sony for warranty work.

I have a defective combo DVD\VHS player sitting in a closet.
It plays DVD's ok but won't play CD's, so the same holds true for stand alone players, they have separate lasers. This was the first unit of it's kind to hit the market. It was 350.00 made by Go Video, the biggest POS I ever owned, had trouble from day 1 and they were never able to fix it. Just goes to show you never buy the newest technology until the bugs get worked out.
