Hi, I have had Clone & AnyDvd for quite some time. My backups have been fine until the last 2 months or so. I started getting "Write Media Error" messages at least 50% of the time when I put a blank in the burner. I have not changed the burner, media type, or added any programs. I also have the most current versions of Clone & AnyDvd. I deinstalled both of them and reinstalled them with no success.

I do not know what else to do. The backups that don't get error messages play OK for the most part except for some freezing. I have 3 players & depending on their mood I can play the backup in 1 of them.

All info is appreciated. I am at a total loss as to why this is happening regularly. Thanks all.

What brand of media are you using? What speed are you writing at? It could be many things but poor media is usually the culprit.

Skipping, freezing are symptons of bad media and burning too fast and multitasking when you should let the computer have the resources to do its burning. Also as Alan asked what version do you have and what kinda media are you using? As well as what kinda burner do you have and its firmware and how is it setup?

Verbatim- -R's, single layer. I have been using the maximum speed since I got the PC new almost 3 yrs. ago.

1) I doubt it's bad media because I use the same kind & I have used blanks from 3 different packs. 2) The burner is a Samsung TS-552B & is no longer supported by S-sung. 3) What ver. of what do you want? I don't know on this one.

Burning at max speed with older burner/firmware is asking for problems. Try burning at 1/2 rated speed. Are your Verbs made in Singapore or elsewhere?

Hi, The label says Taiwan. I got an e mail from the Clone guy & he said the same thing. First, I set the speed @ 8X & made a perfect B-up. He also said if the write @ 8X was OK I could set the burner @ 12X. The verbatim are rated for up to 16X & I'm not sure what my burner specs for writing a DVD are on max. as I bought a PC and ordered the burner from HP.

But, I have been using these same blanks for 3-4 years with no problems. I'll post after a few more discs.

You are a long time CD Freaks Forum Member and have visited both the CloneDVD and AnyDVD Forums on numerous occasions and are fully aware that the definitive manner of identifying Media is to provide the Media MID (Manufacture ID and Media Code). You are also aware that DVD Identifier (http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com), DVDInfo (http://www.dvdinfopro.com), Nero CD/DVD Speed (http://www.cdspeed2000.com/files/NeroCDSpeed_4775.zip) are just a few of the utility software programs that will provide Media MID information.

You are also aware of how to obtain your DVD Burner Firmware version number. Why do you pretend that you are unaware of how to obtain Media MID and DVD Burner Firmware information?

Concerning your Samsung TS-552B DVD Burner Firmware below is a Web Link to Samsung TS-552B Firmwares ->

Purhaps you are unaware but The MediaCodeSpeedEdit tool (http://ala42.cdfreaks.com/MCSE) provides support for your Samsung TS-552B DVD Burner and if necessary you can “tweak” Samsung TS-552B Firmware Media write strategies.

Something to consider is that your Samsung TS-552B is rather old (3/4 years) and it might be wise to consider a new modern DVD Burner that is designed to process today’s newer modern high speed Media. NewEgg (http://www.newegg.com) has the newer DVD Burners available for about 30 bucks. Suggest visiting CD Freaks DVD Burner User Reviews Forum (http://club.cdfreaks.com/f107) for information on DVD Burners.

I read your post and have already checked for firmware updates @ samsung. They do not support this burner any longer. I have written to Clone's tech person and they recommended setting the write speed @ 8X initially and if successful increasing it to 12X. 8X is the preferred speed for Clone. I have completed 1 b-up @ 8X & will do another tomorrow. I am well aware of the fact that the burner is getting older, but I got next to no info when the PC was built regarding the burner. As I have had no problems with it except for this situation I do not profess to be a tech. I am a layperson who is seeking info.

Being a member on this forum doesn't automatically mean I read all the stuff that's posted. I do appreciate your post regarding info on this matter.

My comments concerning your long time CD Freaks Forum Membership in my #8 posted was focused on the fact that in other Forum postings you have made in the past I have directed you to the DVDInfo/DVD Identifier/Nero CD-DVD Speed utility programs to obtain Media MID data and DVD Burner Firmware version number information.

I checked out the Pioneer DVR-112D @ the Newegg site. It seems like a winner & I'll probably order it today. I have another question. I have a DVR that records in HD. I was wondering if and what model DVD burner in HD you might recommend. I am not sure weather to buy a HD unit as the HD/BluRay war is still going on. I would hate to waste money on a unit & find out that that format is going by the wayside. Any suggestions?

First fix your current problems, then do a extensive search on the web about BD&HD-DVD and possible recorders/burners.

It appears that the problem was in the write speed setting. It's now set at 8X & I have had 3 b-ups come out perfect with no freezing or other typical problems.

I have a HD DVR with several shows I want to backup. my current DVD recorders only work @ 450 res. I have heard that DVD recorders in HD are super expensive.

The point about the "war" & waiting game is valid. Who would want to buy a burner & find out later it was a waste of money due to format wars??

Computer based High Definition Burners are expensive (over 400 bucks), in their design infancy, and undergoing a “Format” war battle. At this time/date it would be prudent not to consider purchasing ANY Computer based High Definition Burner.

The present DVD±R DVD Format is going to be the dominant Format on the scene for the foreseeable future. At 30 bucks for a top of the line DVD±R Format IDE DVD Burner this is a safe purchase while the “Power To Be” have their little High Definition “Format” war battle at the average consumers expense. I got burned during the VHS–Beta Max battle and chose not to enter the High Definition battle until a clear and definite overwhelming victor is declared.

I might not always said in the same way but I will concer with bjkg to avoid for the time being going either HD or BD as either could be a winner or both a looser as newer technologies come along...so til then I agree DVD is still a solid winner...in my eyes and wallet....also your limited to the new selecitons only and if you want the older movies you have to have a DVD still...so don't count the old DVD format dead yet....far from it...remember how the DVD format was suppose to replace the CD.....The CD is still around....

I got the Pioneer DVR-112D burner yesterday. I installed it & made 2 b-ups with no problems. NewEgg was a good place to buy. Now all I have to do is check for firmware updates. Thanks for your help.
