But only the first one works in my DVD player, HOWEVER both will work in mycomputer using WinDVD.

Re: Copying DL discs.

Turns out it's just my dvd player that doesnt want to play them. It just doesnt make sense that it will play another DVD (Batman begins) and wont play (Aqua teen hunger force season 4).

Re: Copying DL discs.

mwh27,
A backup will almost always play from computer or the drive that created it. So it is not a valid test. The only valid test is your standalone DVD player.

Never heard of "smae" (or is that a misspelling?) brand media. Budget stuff? With the poorer quality media, even disks bought on the same spindle can vary in quality. So one playing and one not playing does make sense. New members often think their problem is software or hardware related but take convincing that their issue is really a poor grade of media and everything else is working fine.

Buy some Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim at online stores
EDIT Change: <<or if you are shopping at a retail store, get the Sony brand media.>> (Mistake: Sony does not make DL media to my knowledge).
90% probability that your problem is poor quality backup media and/or too fast a burning speed. Try burning good SL blanks at 4X. DL blanks are even safer if burned at 2X. And I'll bet they all work on your standalone player.

Best regards,
Whisperer

He meant "same". As in both discs are from the same manufacturer.

But if that manufacturer isn't good...

The answer to your question is that most DL media is garbage, unfortunately. And thus, the quality will vary from disc to disc. Get better media.

Re: Copying DL discs.

Based on Gurm's simple clarification (I do feel stupid for not figuring that out ), yes, skip the store shelf DL media (which you have not named but I bet it's memorex or similar crap) and order online. Verbatim or TY. Sony doen't make DL that I have seen. Or have a local outlet order them for you. Virtually no good DL media is available in the retail stores. Or can someone correct me on that.

Only other variable is the possibility that your player is not designed to play DL backups. Since you are using DVDDecrypter, the layer breaks should be ok but some players only like DL (DVD9) originals, not DL burned(?)

Right Gurm?

Re: Copying DL discs.

Sorry for the mispellings.

The DVD-DL's were Ritek.

I guess I got some bad apples? But that still dosent explain why Batman Begins will work in both, and ATHF will only work in one.

Can the data be that different? Is there some kind of wierd copy protection?
If so, doesnt DVD Decrypter take it out?

I just found it odd that BB didnt give me any hassle and ATHF does...

PS: WhenI mean "doesnt work" I mean that the player wont even get intothe menu, it just sticks at "loading".

Re: Copying DL discs.

What speed are you burning the Ritek DL at? Can you try slower burns. Even 1X speed might help save expensive DL disks. The few minutes difference is minimal to protect your investment and get a working backup.

^^^^ 2.4x

Hmm, I just checked the other movies that I burned with the DL, and one of the 3 doesnt work. I think it's just a DVD player on its way out.

i'm pretty sure it's the media quality. you got lucky with a couple and unlucky with a couple.

at the moment the only dl discs that people seem to trust are verbatim (MKM media code)

Yup. The riteks are 50/50. Some work, some don't - often from the same batch.

Yes, Verbatim is the one to buy. I have found them at Office Depot and CompUSA so far. They are around, but expensive.

Re: Copying DL discs.

amboyna,
I was not aware one could get the verbs at Office Depot or CompUSA. They usually carry absolute crap media other than Sony -R SL. This is great news to know I can go out and get a few when I am out and waiting for an on-line store order to arrive.

But buying online is WAY cheaper i'm sure.

Re: Copying DL discs.

I picked up Verbatim 16x +R at Office Depot a couple of weeks ago for 12.99 per 50. There was a choice of + or - R for same price.
There are some good bargains advertised in their Sunday ad from time to time.

There is no doubt online stores have them cheaper. Office Depot charged $34.95 for a 10 pack of DVD +R DL, media code MKM 001. There was no tax as I bought them in Oregon. Not sure how much CompUSA wanted. They were not priced. When I asked the salesman how much they were he said he was busy and I could take them to the front counter and have them scanned. There was already 5 people in the line. I put them back on the shelf and walked out.

I couldn't wait for my Supermedia Store order either. I had to have some DL blanks NOW!

The bottom line is all DL media is expensive. I have used 8 of my 10 pack with no coasters. Buying Ritek's not only gets you coasters but you have wasted your valuable time as well.

There's been some debate about this, but, if you've time, take one of the offending discs to your local electronics retailer and try it in one of the new DVD players that specificially support DVD +r/-r/rw media (most current models do). It'll probably work.

Some time ago, I had the same problem with an older Samsung player--backups either failed to start or would break up and stop during play. Tried a number of different media, burned at different speeds, different burners, etc. None of the backups played on the Samsung, yet the original discs (as well as rented movies) all played just fine. I had similar problems when I tried to play the backups on friends' older (2+ years) DVD players. After I replaced the Samsung with a new Samsung (which supports the newer media), the same discs played perfectly and continue to do so to this day (they also play in a new Sony player I have in a second system).
