Audio Confusion

Hello all, Im at the audio and subtitle settings in CloneDVD2 and have no idea what the difference between Dolby AC-3 and DTS are. Theres also an option for 2 and 6 channels that are both checked for some reason. Also under audio streams English Dolby AC-3/6 English DTS/6 and English Dolby AC-3/2 are all checked thus lowering my quality substantialy. Can you guys help clear up what some of these different options mean and which ones i can uncheck to improve compression quality? I have a 7.1 surround sound system currently if that helps any... I've included a pic for clarification.

Re: Audio Confusion

-Dolby AC-3/6 is the common Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track

-DTS (Digital Theater Sound, I believe) is a newer alternative to Dolby. Some believe it is a richer version but it is usually twice the size on disc.

-AC-3/2 is usually a commentary track but it can also be a standard stereo track of the movie or a foreign language track in regular stereo.

All receivers should support Dolby Digital audio but only some of the newer receivers made in the past few years will support DTS and some lower end ones of those don't. It is always safe to keep the Dolby Digital one unless you want the DTS version as well. The 3/2 versions are usually safe to drop unless you want the commentary or foreign tracks (or they could be the original 2.0 stereo track of an older movie or sometimes a music only track). You would neet to load the DVD and see what it offers as far as audio tracks and commentary to verify.

The stream oreferences on the right let you select what tracks to ALWAYS select by default. If you de-select the 2 channel box then no 2-channel tracks will be selected unless you do so manually.

I leave mine set just as your pic shows. That way I get all the English tracks by default and if I want to drop off a track to save room, I can.
