Dvd2one users,Tired of ripping at 2x with winXP???

Moderators, sorry for the off topic post, but it is intended to help dvd2one users fully enjoy the program.

I know this topic will probably be moved because they will say its in the wrong forum, but I want to share this amazing DMA fix with all of my fellow dvd2one enthusiasts. and many of you may have already found this as well, but many more have not.

I found this at the doom9 decrypting forum: ripping speed from 10x to 2x....

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=43758

QUOTE from la_Nce:

Hi,
because I was bored yesterday I wrote a little tool that will gather
the 'normal' DMA checksums and then write them into registry in a configurable interval (e.g. 10 mins). I don't know if this keeps Windows from switching to PIO mode, but we will see.
Wishes and comments appreciated,

la_Nce

Sorry for my bad english!

end quote.

you may have to uninstall both the primary and secondary IDE contollers in the device manager, then reboot, they will automatically re install, this seems to re set or clear the DMA log. the dmafix.exe keeps it fixed. i recomend going to doom9 ripping forum and reading the whole thread.

It worked for me,on my desktop pc, I was ripping at 2x with my pioneer A03 and 1x with my dvd-rom. i went through all the recomened steps to check the dma/pio settings with no result. i was resigned to the fact that that was the fastest i would ever rip without buying a new dvd-rom(not). But now i rip at up to 8x. First came dvd2one and now this, wonders never cease.

P.S.

it did not work on my HP ze5170 laptop,it couldnt find the dma checksums for some reason.

Jim

I tried it and DMAFIX set my IDE controller back to DMA mode2. However, when I start ripping at 4.5x, it hangs my system. When it was in PIO mode, it was ripping at 1.9x ok because it was so much slower. I wonder if it's because my IDE cable or something else. Think EIDE cable would help?

EIDE/new cable couldn't hurt...

what are your system specs? try ripping from both your dvd-rom and your dvd-r/rw drive. one may work better than the other. i always rip with my dvd-rom,i get better speed. if there is a firmware update for your burner you could try that. i also wonder if your master and slave settings are correct.

did you uninstall your primary and secondary ide channels before running dmafix?

i dont know much about the dma settings myself so i wouldnt want to give to much bad advice. the best advice i can give is to go to the doom9 forum and read the thread where i found the dmafix and others about the dma issue. there are many people there who know way more than i do. also the creator of dmafix is in there.

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=43758

register at doom9 right away, there is a waiting period before a new member can post questions. this gives people time to read through the forum and helps prevents redundant questions from being asked.

@ loggy

did the dma fix work for you?
I have to admit that i expected a lot more feed back on this tool. i was under the impression that many people,if not all with XP have the 2x ripping issue. there are 1200 views on this thread,i have to assume that most of those people have been ripping at 2x.

jwo62,
I posted the same question over there but did not get a response at all. I waited 2 days and I decided to post here. I was not aware of the XP down shift problem until I read you post and did a search. I had been wondering about that and I thought it was my system. It was ripping at 3.4x and then it dropped all the way to 1.6-1.9x until I did the fix. No, I did not remove the IDE channel before I install dmafix.exe I guess I can give that a try. I am thinking it's more of a set up issue. I remember I was ripping at 4x way before and it hung my system before the speed down shift. I've tried it on my writer(A05) as well.

System info:
Tyan Server board with on-board Ultra-scsi.
3 Ultra SCSI HD(20G, 20G, 36G)
IDE1 - A05 DVD-R/RW writer (Master)
IDE2 - Samsung SD-816 (Master)
Dual P3(1Gx2)
1G DRAM
32MB NVDIA Graphic card.

Haven't tried it yet (and also, don't need it yet--my setup has stayed DMA2). I'm concerned with author's remark that the .exe functions "every ten minutes", as that seems excessive for a regkey-rewrite (maybe I'm interpreting wrong?).
As for burners--most (including Pioneer) are limited to 2X ripping by firmware. I have the "DVR-105 v1.33 - RPC-1 + 2xDVD-R + 12xRip" hacked-FW from Gradius/>Nil: on my 105 now, and that helps.

Read dvd-r/ram/+rw forum...

My 12x Toshiba dvd-rom pokes along at 2x also, but I haven't looked into a FW-fix for it.
I'm somewhat 'leery' of adding stuff like FW/AnyDvd/'fixes' or even ripping at 2X on a dvd-rom (instead of a burner) due to fear of errors being introduced during a rip. Lot's of data being transfered fast, and error-correction/etc. Don't want to sacrifice confidence for speed--but no harm in a fix for the XP DMA-PIO reset, of itself.
What's with 'every ten minutes'?

it can be reset to whatever you want. i actually dont always have it running all the time, but one day while i was ripping several dvds, the rip speed dropped to 2x. i realised i hadnt had the dmafix running for a couple days and i did rip a few dvds in that time. its possible that once a day is adequate. i would only start the dmafix if i knew i was going to rip.
