codec question

Hi all, though I,m not new to audioprocessing on computers, I am kind of new to video.
The question is quite simple: how can I gain control over which codecs are used decoding divX/Xvid movies???
When using gspot to see which codecs are possible to use processing video and audio, I'd like to gain control over them.

For example: mp3streams in divX: there is the fraunhofer, odio dekoda, and directshow. How do I pick those and decide myself which to use????

I'm not talking bout encoding, but decoding/processing/listening and viewing the films
( Hell i hope the answer is briefer than the question)
Cheers!!

NO,No that's not what I mean.
I do have theproper decoders and filter to play all kinds of video and audio, codecpacks are too tricky, installed them manually
( ffdshow, odio dekoda, nicepheratu, and the xpnative fraunhofer)

What I'd like to know is how do I switch between them...
For example fraunhofer and odio dekoda can handle a mp3stream in a divx, but I want to pick one of them out and don't know how?

Please?!

lol

you wanted a short answer

can't answer that....don't know how exactly codecs are selected when you play a movie

but why do you want to switch ..if you could have 1 good codec??

Okay, it may be a somewhat academical question, but then again it's about keeping control over my comp, is it not???
It's almost impossible to keep only one decoder for every format
( take mp3, the fraunhofer nativexp is crappy compared to lame, and there are several xvid builts, and one is better than the other ) Okay, ffdshow is already a big step, I guess when it comes to only watching and listening...
But still it must be possible to choose yourself between them instead of letting windhoos doing this...

Anyone, anywhere???

The only way I know is to unregister the codecs you do not want to use and then your PC is forced to use the one you tell it to.
To be honest I have never questioned wich codec my PC uses to show video streams, there might be players out there that help you choose, but the main questions about codecs is when you are encoding something, that's when you get all the options.

i am not so sure BUT :-)
in your system properties, you can assign priorities to the different codecs.

that may be what you want to do but then you cannot change between them but only tell windows which codec to prefer.

my 2 cents on this ...

I'm not sure either , but it might be have something to do in the order they were registered to your system. Any .OCX / .DLL or codec installs themselves using RegSvr32 (may not be visible during installation). You might want to search the microsoft technet about the registration of codesc and what policies they apply within them. Perhaps the registry can be of help as well.

Rememer : If you poke around in the registry & codecs , be sure to have a good backup first !

I think I've got an addon question for this thread.
The problem I'm facing is that certain codecs are associated with specific programs. For example, 2 AC3 codecs that I have installed are associated with Nero Digital Audio Decoder. I want to change this association. Of course uninstalling the codec would work to some degree, but I like to know how these associations start in the first place. What makes the codec associate itself to Nero instead of BSPlayer or something...

Anyone any idea?
