i have down loaded a file it is a avi movie file but have tryed just about every program to convert it so i can burrn and play it on a home dvd player,it will play on the commputer with nero but wont let me make a copy, is ther a program that will tell me what type of file it is, some of the programs i have tryed are winavi...nero...avi converter and dvduck wont play it and it will play just about everything...

Do a google for GSpot it will tell you what it is..

ok it is a avi file but direct show was unable to render it as the format was not supported... all i wont to do is put it on disk so i can watch the movie, ther must be a program out there.... avi to anything that i can put on disk...

you said it will play in nero right? have you tried to play it with DIVX player? or any other players? VSO makes DIVXtoDVD you might try that. also you might want to try nerovision 3 if it will play in nero then nero should be able to reencode it.
