Buy a newer TV that can change it for you. Other wise its a pain in the ass.

I guess if you seriously wanted to chop the sides of the video off, all you have to do is select the appropriate Pan&Scan option in any DVD player made since the beginning of time.

I have alot of time i just want it to fit my tv and not have the big black spaces

Free 16:9 to 4:3: well i cant think of any but a good trial version (which has full features but it puts a watermark on the finished product) is WinAvi Converter whihc is the fastest video converter (and also widescreen to full)

As for turning a widescreen to full screen...that's not a very good idea, but if you really want to, then when you convert a video with Dr. divx (which I explained a little more in my page), you can specify the size of the video, so you can change it to something like 640X480. However, if you do that, then everything will be unusually narrow in the new video.

Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to this question. I generally recommend...

Free DVD Ripper - DVD DeCrypter or DVDFab DeCrypter

Free DVD Burner - Same as above.

...because these two programs seem to have the most success with the most discs. Using RipIt4Me in conjunction with DVD DeCrypter has given me the most success. And best of all, the programs I've suggested are all freeware!

Above all else, please bear in mind that DVD ripping is a very complex thing. What works for one disc will often not work for another. You need to do a LOT of reading in these forums (as well as on AfterDawn, Digital Digest and VideoHelp forums) in order to understand all of the issues involved. I've lurked here for years now. And I can tell you that I still learn new things every day. Sometimes it's just a simple matter of a tweak or two. Sometimes it gets extremely arcane. And that's just the nature of the beast. Unlike ripping an audio CD, DVD ripping simply is NOT a one click affair. If ONLY it were so easy. But the long and short of it is you need to read and educate yourself on the issues and then experiment until you find a method which gives you success.

Whew. I'm just glad you didn't ask about ripping DVD to DivX or XviD. Now THAT'S complex. :-D

I agree completely about needing an education and checking out all the user forums.

In my search I eventually bought a dvd ripper user guide to all the software mentioned above. And before jumping on me, yes, I could definately have found everything in the guide elsewhere for free, and did, including many other user guides available for free. But it was worth it to me to just get it all in one place and spelled out in more detail than just a few screen shots like you see on most on-line guides.

In the interest of offering more options, people might also be interested in ImgBurn which is authored by the original author of DVD Decrypter and picks up (for burning) where DVD Decrypter left off. You'll still need to rip using another product like DVDFab first though. Be sure to revisit DVDFab regularly since they update frequently.

I usually just download a free trial for different DVD ripper software, use them for the freeware period, then download another. It's a good way in my opinion.
