Question: wireless Media Server for dvd's - Club CDFreaks

Well here is my problem I just built my new PC with 4 1Tb HDD's and I have all my DVDs (500 or so) backed up on this PC in ISO form and I watch them using VLC and that works great but this PC is in my office and I want to watch my movies in my bedroom and living room but it is not an option at this point to run network cables or optical through my house so I am using an old notebook hooked to my wireless 802.11g network to play the movies on my TV and this works fine except for the movies skip sometimes and this is really annoying to me .if I copy the ISO file to the hard drive on the laptop it plays flawlessly but this takes an hour to copy over the network. If anyone has a solution That would make me very happy Thanks!

Hi,

how you play your videos over the network?
are you just using a shared folder or do you use the streaming server that is built in into VLC?

I am going in to my network places finding the movie file I want to watch on my media server PC and double clicking the ISO file and the movie starts to play.

Wow all that went right over my head I know nothing about vlc other than it plays all my files and those links just confusrd the S#@t out of me .

How good is the signal on your wireless, on both ends. Maybe check all the options for the wireless, maybe try setting it to only g mode, or if there is a jumbo packets to enable somehow. Update the firmware for the router and adapter.

OK I figured out how to stream it using vlc and that made it worse and now the audio is affected. all my firmware is up to date and signal strength is (very good)

I recently modded an old & cheap XBox with XBMC.

DVD ISOs > USB External HDD > Laptop > WiFi 802.11G > Netgear Wireless Router > Wired Ethernet CAT5 > Xbox XBMC.

I am playing these over wireless link. Works fine. With a wired CAT5 or CAT6 you'd get an even more stable connection.

You can now install XBMC on Linux or Windows on your Laptop or something and then output to TV in bedroom. But Xbox or Mac Mini might be the best.

OTOH - You could buy one of the Network Media Players like Popcorn Hour. To get the best review go to mpcclub.com
