Old school, but by time you'll also learn old man . Watter is good!

You still have free PCI slot, why not add a PCI to IDE card and hook up your IDE opticals.

BTW what are your times with Super PI and at what temps?
Got me a C2D 4300 for my burning rig (hooked on a Asrock P865 with 2 IDE channels).

wow sorry i didn't see you post pinto2. I do have a PCI/IDE card in my list of parts and in post #3 there's a link to my finished pc, but i still have not got it moved to the table/desk i need to move it to My wife is still bugging me

How does C2D run in that set up?

No water for me pinto2. Easier for me to shut down spray canned air on all my parts and boot up and go then to see my parts gets hosed by water. That would be my luck

Re: rolling56's C2D build pics

super pi calculates the decimals of pi to selected lengths, 1 million is the standard test just about everyone uses, and sometimes 32m

IIRC a clocked A64 takes ~30sec for 1m and a clocked c2d should get sub 20's (don't quote me on that one though) I'm not sure how long 32m takes, but it should be 15min or so

You sure do keep a clean desktop rollin........wish I could be that neat.

I have absolutely no idea what that screenshop represents. Must have something to do with overclocking (based on jwills comment).

I hide my desktop. That's just a folder where Super PI is. Look at jwill's post #57

Rolling

You have inspired me; got a little help with putting the parts lists together (from a mutual friend) got'em ordered and they started coming in today. Should have them all by Tuesday and then my new build starts. Looks like pretty much the same system you have build here with just a few little changes.

Kipper you won't be disappointed unless you want to go to a Quad core. That will be my next upgrade when they come down in price.

I get inspired every time i see what zevia or crossg has

Happy building

Re: rolling56's C2D build pics

How about some guidance on a mother board (below $150).....and video card (below $100). Don't have a lot of $$.

I'm assembling my first non-gaming desktop that needs firewire and my next two purchases are a mother board and video card.

I'll be doing some limited video editing.....and my video capturing device uses firewire to connect to the computer.

I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800 socket AM2 processor, Kingsport Value Ram (2GB kit) DDR2 PC2 667Mhz memory, Antec Sonata II case with built-in power supply, a couple of hard drives, and a dvd drive.

Any guidance would be most appreciated. Keep in mind, I'm new at this.

What's your opinion of Mushkin memory?

What about this video card? eVGA GeForce 7600GS PCI Express 256MB Video Card for $70 afer rebates. Keep in mind, I'm no gamer.

Re: rolling56's C2D build pics

for the video card I would go with the 6600gt, witch is a faster card than the 7600gs and only $30 after rebate at tiger direct
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...782&CatId=1559

I'm not sure about the best sub $150 mobo with firewire, but the new AMD chipset mobos seem pretty good

3.4 isn't passing the stress test but 3.3ghz is so I have some more work to do.

Heck I ran some tests at stock 2.4ghz and it was beating my dual core opteron that was at 2.7ghz, wow these chips are great!

Temps are pretty good at 54c air cooled, what are your temps now at 3ghz??

I just bumped mine up to 3.2. Here's a TAT screen shot of my temps with 100% cpu load here.

What's wrong with your existing motherboard & ram?
Buy a Firewire card for $10-20
Spend the $150 you saved on a better CPU .. ebay the 3800
Maybe ebay your existing ram & buy 4G if you are video editting alot.
