Re: Re Install

uh... if they are installation files... otherwise the programs might be tied into the registry, that you want to wipe..

Re: Re Install

In my opinion a fresh install is a good idea, mostly if you have virus issues.

Create a backup of your data on the second HDD, unplug it and reinstall anything.

Then, after install is complete and you have an updated antivirus, do a scan of your backup HDD.

Re: Re Install

When you do a fresh install, start computer with windows CD in the drive.

It should ask you if you want to format HDD first. Select Yes, and follow instructions on the screen.

Re: Re Install

Ok thanks, I will give it a go in around 3 hours because I have to copy over 100GB of stuff to my other drive.

Re: Re Install

You're welcome

I suggest to unplug the second HDD during the fresh reinstall, in case there is a virus also in data.

After windows is installed and configured, install an antivirus, and only then plug the data HDD to check it.

Re: Re Install

Another important thing.....If you have any USB storage devices then make sure you uplug them before you reinstall Windows XP...If you leave them plugged in the drive Letter assigned to your Hard drive will be anything other than C:...Actually while you are installing Windows...Disconnect any external Devices other than your Keyboard, mouse and Monitor...this will ensure an installation without any messups.......

Re: Re Install

Another good practice is to use nLite and slipstream SP2 (if you have an older XP) and all your hardware drivers (.inf files for video, add on cards, web cam, printer etc if needed). In addition, I personally like RyanVM's SP2 update pack, with this pack I don't need to go to windowsupdate anymore. He also removed the annoying Windows Genuine Advantage Tool from the latest version.

nLite: http://www.nliteos.com/
Addons: http://www.nliteos.com/addons/
RyanVM update pack: http://www.ryanvm.net/msfn/updatepack.html

PS: I never unplug my drives when reinstalling. Just carefully choose the correct drive/partition within XP installation.

Re: Re Install

Dont slipstream drivers if you dont need to, it'll cause you rather interesting issues sometimes :-)
As for updates...
