Problems with ripping

Hello,

There are some CDs/CD-Rs I try to rip on my computer (in wav or mp3 format) that give me 3 or 4 tracks with errors (the X1 code with CdEx for example), where there is a fraction of the song that is missing. But if I try to to rip the very same CD with another computer I'm using at work, it rips fine, with no errors at all.

I changed the ASPI drivers from 4.71.1 to 4.60 on my home computer, checked if DMA was enabled and it didn't change anything, the same problem happens with some CDs.

Could the problem be that my CD/DVD writer is going down, after just 1 year of use? It still burns CDs and DVDs fine. The problem is just with ripping. It's a LG 4167B.

Anyone has any idea to solve my problem?

Thanks for any help.

P.S. It doesn't seem to be a software problem cause the errors happen when I'm using CdEx (1.51 or 1.70 Beta2), or Audiograbber 1.83 or Exact Audio Copy.

Re: Problems with ripping

It could be because the reader in the other machine is more tolerant of disc errors.

For example: I have ripped CDs with my NEC drive, and gotten the odd error in CDex. However, if I rip the same disc with my LiteOn, the rip is error-free.

Edit: I see you have a 4167B - these drives are pretty picky with discs that have any errors on them, just like my NEC.

What's the make/model of the drive you used at work?

Re: Problems with ripping

No name on the one at work, but Everest gives me this:

Hitachi - LG HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8520B

If I'd upgrade the firmware of my 4167B, could it solve the problem? I've never done it since I bought it, so it's surely not the newest one that's installed.

Re: Problems with ripping

Hmmm, so that's an LG too, a CD-RW.

I too have an LG CD-RW, but I never ripped from it (edit: haha, the same one!), so I don't know if it's a better ripper than your 4167B.

I doubt updating the firmware would help much, although it's worth a shot.

Your best bet may be to pick up a LiteOn drive to use if you do a lot of ripping....just a thought, have you tried CDex in Full Paranoia Mode?

That might work

So, the LiteOn drives are the best ones for ripping?

Where can I change the CdEx setting to Full Paranoia Mode? I don't seem to find it...

Re: Problems with ripping

I have more luck with LiteOn than other drives for ripping...although I will say that I haven't ripped all that much with my latest one.

As for the Full Paranoia mode in CDex....go to Options -> Settings, and click on the CD Drive tab.

In that screen, you'll see an option called Ripping Method, with a drop-down menu box. Click that, and choose Paranoia, Full.

Be aware that this may take longer than a "normal" rip.

Re: Problems with ripping

I updated the firmaware of my LG 4167B from DL11 to DL13. No changes, I still get errors when trying to rip some CDs. For some others, it goes well...It sucks...

Re: Problems with ripping

Even in Full Paranoia mode?

If yes, then I'd say it's just a case of the drive not being a strong reader.

I didn't think updating the firmware would make a difference - more often than not, they improve writing strategies etc rather than reading ability.
