Need advice on a soundcard to buy

hey i upgraded to windows 2003 a while ago, and unpleasantly discovered that the sound card was not supported by windows 2003 (yes i know sound is initially disabled, that was not my problem, my problem was that there were no drivers for windows 2003)

anyways i am looking to buy a sound card, but i am not sure about one that will work

i want to get the best card i can get for $25 or less (yes, a budget card)... maybe 5.1 channels or something i dont know, but i dont want to buy something thats not compatible, i am comfortable with rebates so i can get mor bang for my buck

for exmple, heres a nice card that i might end up getting http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProduc...120-101&depa=1 but im not sure if its compatible with windows 2k3....

anyone have suggestions??

if you think this is a stupid question because ur sound card works fine... plz tell me what card you have!!!

thanks!!!

1st of all, don't get a SB Live/Audigy card. *yes, that's right, you damn Live/Audigy puppets, screw your card* Mainly because its drive is the the worst on the market and tend to not work w/ anything. But of course, they blame it on the chipset (VIA).

The card you mentioned is nothing more than some cheap ass onboard sound card's put on a PCI card. Lame.

I suggest you do a search on pricewatch and get an OEM version of Philips Acoustic Edge (PSC706). Been using it for the past few years and it's awesome. No IRQ prob like the damn SB line-up.

thx for the advice

i did a quick search on pricewatch and only came up with some around $60

however i flew over to ebay and saw

one for $20 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...&category=3701) which is supposedly new

and

one for $10 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...&category=3701)which is used

i think ill try to get one of these!

<edit> do you know if it will work on win2k3? i suppose i would be willing to chance it tho </edit>

There's no official support, but it should work. Driver Page.

BTW, I would go w/ the 2nd ebay auction. The 1st dude is ripping people off w/ super high shipping. What a jackass.

@Stoner - It's not just Via chipsets, Audigy sucks it up on my SiS 655 too

@PiratePete - I've heard a couple people raving about this Terratec DMX 6fire LT. Forget where, maybe hydrogenaudio.org? Anyways it's a professional card, but the Lite version (it's missing the equivalent of the Audigy's LiveDrive...big loss ) $99, but still a good deal I think.

Time to resurrect the old lady (this thread).

I'm in need of a soundcard for games, with low CPU-utilization. Now this is your chance Stoner to save me from the Creative swamp by proposing another soundcard that suits me better than the borrowed Soundblaster Live! 5.1 I'm using right now (and it works flawlessly btw).

And, does anybody know the difference between Audigy and Audigy ES? Nobody on the entire internet including Creative seems to know the difference!
Not too pricey please.

Okay I found out what ES means, it's creative lingo for "OEM" and it has no Firewire, which is okay cause I already have IEEE1394.

With latest drivers, I am very impressed with my Audigy, I even bought the front Panel adapter. Its so convenient that eveyrthing is in the front. You don't have to reach back anymore. Also, the sound is great, but you need good speakers to go with it.

Audigy seems fine, one of those it'll be. Aye it's very convenient to have ports on the front, I have that already.
