memory recognizing problem

Hello and a happy new year!

My girlfriend has this motherboard and i tried to install 512 MB RAM
( 2 x 256 MB / 133 ) but only 256 MB are recognized. If one chip is installed only 128 MB are recognized. The chips are ok. Also the bios is up to date. Board Revision is 1.3a.
Any suggestions?

TIA

F.P.

Most probably, your mainboard doesn't support double sided memory, while your modules are probably double sided. Only one side is detected, so only the half amount of each module is accepted. This explains the 128mb/256mb problem.

Some motherboards only support double sided modules in a certain configuration (for instance, 1 double sided module in memory slot 1, other slots can only be filled with single sided modules).
You might want to try to rotate the modules over the different memory slots and see what happens, as this helps sometimes..

The manual says that the board supports both, single and double sided. The limit is 1,5 GB. I have double sided ones.

Hmm that is rather odd. I mean, this problem you describe is a typical case of double sided memory on a board that doesn't support it (seen it a dozens of times). The only other thing I can think of, is either defective memory/mainboard or a compatibilty isuee, despite the fact that the memory qualifies for the board....

Are you sure "new" memory DIMMs (133MHz) are backward compatible?
Install your DIMMs in order as shown.

My gf too had this board and it was a pain in the A$$. It was VERY memory picky. It liked Kingston but not MicronPC (also means NOT Crucial). I had a terrible headache with this board, in the end I got her a new board (MSI) as it deemed easier a solution.

What memory brand are you using?
--If its generic, this board will do odd and unusual things and crap out left and right. Also, memory will be detetced in strange ways as you are having issues now.

This baord does recognize single sided and double sided memory, but once again, doesn't like them in combo's, only same exact memory type in all banks used.

Hope it helped some, good luck.

@ pinto: AFAIK are new 133 memory chips backward compatible and they are installed in the correct order.

@ xtacydima: That sounds very bad . I used exactly the same memory type in both banks. ( Brand is GDi?, never heard of them....)

However, I have contacted the Elitegroups Support Center and will wait for their reply....

Thanks for your help.
