Which memory can I use?

I have a Compaq Presario SR1010NX. It has a Celeron 2.7 w/ 256mb of RAM. I added a 512 and was thinking about taking out the 256 that it came with and adding a 512. According to HP/Compaq:

Memory

Component
Attributes

Memory Installed
256 MB (1 x 256)

Maximum allowed
1 GB (2 x 512 MB) requires the replacement of the installed 256MB DIMM

Speed supported
PC2700 MB/sec (messages at PC2100

Type
184 pin, DDR1-333 SDRAM

DIMM slots
Two

But, every memory configurator that I use says I can have upto 2GB. By adding 2 - 1GB modules. I chatted with an online tech w/ HP and they said to only go my the mfg. suggested of 2 - 512mb modules.

Can I use the 1GB modules with my PC?

Also, would it really make a difference? When I'm burning DVD's I tend to use up the memory. Not so much when burning, but I move Tivo files from my Tivo to my PC and edit with Nero and Sonic My DVD. While it is building the menus and movie files is when it uses all the memory.

I appreciate any advice you can give.

Thanks,

Keith

Re: Which memory can I use?

1gb is more than enough memory, unless you plan on performing video encoding, and trying to work with photoshop at the same time.

Re: Which memory can I use?

Memory controllers are finicky things. Unless you can post the actual chipset used on your motherboard, it's impossible to say what it might do with 2 x 1GB sticks. It's possible it would use them but only recognize 1/2 of it.

I'd stick with the makers recomendation of 2 x 512MB. I'd also suggest that you use 2 identical sticks of 512.
