LCD Monitor tips & tweaks?

I just got my first LCD monitor, here is the link:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824021019

When I am gaming, the screen is blurry when I am moving around in the game. It it looks kinda like GTA3 tracers. The recommended resolution is 1280x1024 which is what I am running it in. I just installed the driver for the monitor, but it didn't really help. Any tips, tweaks, things I need to know, etc?

Thanks!

Re: LCD Monitor tips & tweaks?

Hi DJ, I just bought a Samsung a while ago and had the same problem then realized that my game resolution was still set to 1024x 768 changed it to 1280x1024 and all is well. Just a thought.

I tried that earlier, but it didn't really seem to help...I don't really know what else to do, I am thinking of sending it back and getting a CRT flat screen.

Re: LCD Monitor tips & tweaks?

Try setting the refresh to 60 Hz instead of the max 75 Hz. That worked for me on my 12 ms LCD's. As rdgrimes mentioned try the DVI and/or DB15 and see which provides the least motion blur.

Everything is adjustable, provided you have the right tools /.

I have tried setting the refresh rate to 60 with no luck, however I have only tried the DVI connection. You guys think I should try the standard monitor connection?

It can't hurt at this point.

Ok, I tried the standard monitor connection and it didn't improve much if any. I don't know what else to try, here are screenshots of my monitor options for both of the connections. Any ideas?

DJ,

You might try this new drivers from NVidia:

1. http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_81.98.html (newest).
2. http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_66.93

No, I am 2 versions behind, the newest ones just came out & the ones that were before that didn't seem to work as well as their predecessors. I am about to try the newest ones out.

Thanks for the link Alex!

I have read that it is better to use the card manufacturers drivers rather than the Nvidia reference drivers, but I have always used the drivers from the Nvidia site. Do you guys think it makes a difference?

Re: LCD Monitor tips & tweaks?

I think it's just ghosting, response time is misleading a lot of the time. I know that LCD claims 8ms, but I've seen LCDs that have 12-16ms response time that ghost worse than 25ms LCDs. Then I've seen 16ms LCDs that look about the same as my L90D+ (which is FAST for an LCD). Maybe Rosewill's 8ms spec is a bunch of BS. I think it's just ghosting, all LCDs ghost, even the VX924 (which is REALLY FAST, but it has weak color, and does weird stuff with some motion ) . I saw a supposedly 8ms 17" cheapo LCD that ghosted worse than most of the 25ms LCDs @ comp USA. I couldn't remember the brand, but it was some generic POS, I'm pretty sure the 8ms spec was a complete fabrication.

I think you are right bro, and it looks like I am going to send this thing back and get a good ole' CRT & a few bucks back.

I wasn't going to threadcrap when I first saw your post as I didn't want to spoil the fact that you'd just bought an LCD, but now I feel it's ok to say what I was going to earlier :

I'm not a fan of LCDs at ALL, I much prefer the image quality of a CRT and will only buy a LCD if space is an issue or if CRTs become difficult to find. The CRT you just bought is a great monitor as well.

My ancient iiyama 4431 LCD is rated at 25ms, but I've never seen even a hint of ghosting in games or movies.

Re: LCD Monitor tips & tweaks?

They Hyundai L90D+ is a good LCD that doesn't ghost very much. I only notice it with extremely fast motion, finally I consider an LCD an acceptable replacement for a CRT. I've seen 16ms LCDs that ghost just slightly worse than my hyundai, so it all depends on the LCD. The Samsung 930b isn't bad either, but I hear it isn't as clear or as good as the hyundai. I just bought another hyundai for my little bro for christmas. They really are nice LCDs. My brother's had a few non functional pixels when I first opened it, but I was able to bring them all back to life with a quick gentle massage. Mine has 2 dead pixels, it's barely noticable.

I wonder if I should just get that Samsung CRT, and wait a while to get another LCD display.

If desk space isn't a primary concern, I'd say go with it. Samsung makes nice CRTs.

Re: LCD Monitor tips & tweaks?

DJ,

Before sending it back, please try the new drivers for NVidia, let's see if it makes any diference.
Once, I have solved a similar issue with a new driver (ATI Radeon). Now, the LCD works flawlessly, no problems at all, and it is mainly used for a massive online RP game.

Re: LCD Monitor tips & tweaks?

Well, after several days of testing, tweaking, etc, I have decided to send this monitor back & get a Samsung CRT. I just hope Newegg will be helpful throughout the process. Thanks for all the help!

Samsung makes some nice CRT monitors and TVs but best of theirs used to use Japanese tubes. Since Samsung almost stopped any investment on CRTs, I guess their quality hasn't improved much. Nice thing about Samsung displays is Samsung-made LCD panels tend to cost lower than those by LG.Philips LCD.

Never felt a "ghosting" on my LG L2320T but then I never play a game except Minesweeper or Freecell.

In addition to space, the big reason why South Korea has practically half of the world's LCD market is that it costs too much for South Korea to produce and consume electricity especially considering the rate it is growing and increasing energy consumption. Well, I gave my last (Orion 19-inch) CRT monitor to a neighbor (whom I never met before) in last month. I'm going to "upgrade" to smaller LCD or other flat panel displays or devices that use such display units from now on that use nearly negligible electricity and are as light as eyeglasses or mobile phones.
