installing dvdrom inside nonworking standalone player

ok heres the scoop ..my standalone philips 724 wont play anything.Cleaned head and all still no go.Notice dvd player in my philips looks just like a pc dvdrom same cables and all.Hooked pc dvd rom up to standalone works great and access times is a hell of a lot faster!Just got to do some customizing to mount payer inside stand alone to use same slot...Is this a good idea? Any gains or fall backs you can think off,,,..I know I'm a cheapskate but hey spending 28 dollars for a toshiba 16X SD-M1802 and rigging it up still beats 120 dollars for a decent stand alone dvd player...thanks

I have heard of some stand alones that have a pc drive . I wouldn't hesitate to put a pc drive in.

Never tried so myself, but I read/heard about this before, so if it works, I don't see a reason not to do this (except for the voided warranty of course)!
