| Computer Can't See Music CDs Okay, I hope you guys (and gals) can help out with this odd little problem as I can't seem to find an answer anywhere else. My computer is able to see data CDs and DVDs, but can't see store purchased music CDs. It just won't play them, it literally thinks there is nothing in the CD tray. Odd thing is, this is a fairly new development, it used to play music CDs fine. There was no new software that I can think of that was installed when this problem happened, save perhaps Microsoft's virtual drive, but that has since been uninstalled. Hardware: NEC 3520. Enable Digital CD Playback is checked under the drive properties. Driver details, show cdrom.sys, GEARAspiWDM.sys, imapi.sys, pcf.sys, pxHelp20.sys, rebook.sys and storprop.dll. AMD Athlon 64 3500+, 1GB RAM. The mother board uses a nVidia chip set, which was not updated when the problem showed itself up. I would guess a driver got lost or the drive itself has a problem that magically showed up, but how odd is it that it can see everything else fine and read them, but can't see an audio CD? |

| Re: Computer Can't See Music CDs Bought any Sony Audio cd's lately? Sony had a nice little rootkit that installed itself into your system ... all you had to do was press "OK". They've since offered replacement CD's without the virus aid. But the recall process assumes that you know about it. Any new games lately? Starforce protected games are also known to install a nasty little routine hooker that has been known to cause issues. What is microsoft "Virtual drive"? I must confess I've never heard of it. I suspect that you've actually installed one of the above that hook cdrom access routine calls. Other than that, you may have installed either a new software player, or decrypting program like anydvd which may not be functioning correctly. Please disable any programs that may be accessing the drive before you (auto-start programs like WinDVD remote, powerdvd, creative disc launcher, anydvd, DVD43 & etc). I don't think any of the games I got would cause it, since none of them use CDs, and I can't seem to locate starforce anywhere. I'll do a better search tomorrow for starforce. I shouldn't have anything in the autostart outside the virus and konfabulator... I'll check that too. You also have about 3 aspi layers installed - for various different software. Probably not an issue, but for troubleshooting, best to just leave Nero installed. Also, the Nvidia ATA drivers have been known to also cause issues with optical drives - although not necessarily audio. Might try using standard M$ Ide drivers, rather than NV drivers. To check out your autostart: Start->Run Type "Msconfig" + enter Startup tab. Anything which isn't direly needed, disable (you can turn them back on later, if you need to).

| Re: Computer Can't See Music CDs If you find a solution to this problem please message me. I can play DVD's fine, read data CD's with no problem, but Music and Mixed CD's are not recognized. Originally I thought the computer was considering them blank media because you could double click the drive letter and it would open a window with no files in the explorer view. Additionally, XP showed a link on the upper left of the info pane that said "Click here to write these files to CD". I disabled DLA thinking this would prevent drag and drop style recording to this drive and restor my music CD capability. However it did not work. Now trying to access content on a music cd only results in a request to insert a disk into the drive. |

| Re: Computer Can't See Music CDs Jeff_TC I still have the same basic problem. I recently got rid of a few things, upgraded Nero, but the problem is still there, even in Safe Mode. I think I'll try and see if it will boot from a bootable CD. If it doesn't then I think I'll consider it some odd hardware problem. The bad thing, my Windows CD isn't recognized as it doesn't recognize CDs of any type. I thought it recognized data CDs, but it stopped that. It still reads/writes DVDs. |

The computer tried for awhile and I could here the player working on it, but in the end it booted from the hard drive. I was helping the baby at the time, so I didn't see if any messages came up on the console before it booted, but I think that proves that in my case anyhow, it is a hardware problem. I guess I now must decide what burner to replace it with. It would be nice if it was a good reliable DVD/CD burner, but with Mount Rainier support since Vista will finally support Mount Rainier nativity, although I am not sure how much that would be used even then... just a nice feature to have. Oh and booktype. |

| Re: Computer Can't See Music CDs My previous post was slightly wrong. I said that I could read Data discs however, I have discovered that I can only read data discs stored on DVD media. No other cd's are recognized by the computer. I'm starting to lean toward replacing the cdrom drive. I would just hate to replace it and discover that the problem was caused by firmware or drivers. |
