Burning dvds freeze at 1% + nero error message

I upgraded my motherboard recently, havn't had a chance to do any burning since then. The burning was working fine beforehand.

The other day I started backing some files up, I do all my burns at 8x with +R media, usually with Nero 6.6.0.13, on a BenQ 1620.

I insterted a blank dvd, the drive didn't recognise it. What gives? So I ejected it and tried again, this time it picked it up.

I'm fairly sure that burn went ok, but the second dvd that I tried to burn was slow (took about 30min to burn and authenticate rather than 15 or so), and there were burn errors, big chunks of 50-100 sectors.

Restarted the computer with a bit of success; half a dozen burns without dramas. Then the same problem, randomly slowed down burn speed, errors when checking.

When this happens, the bar will get stuck at 1% for a few minutes, make some ab-normal spinning noises (like stuttering, rather than just building up speed as normal burns do). After a few minutes it'll start the burning (at a slower speed ofcourse), with the clock ticking down like normal. When it reaches about 25% complete, the timer will say 0:00 burn time left...

This has happened about 5 times now, losing too many dvds. I have also checked to make sure the drive is still Ultra DMA 2 when this happens, and it is.

After this happens twice in a row, nero wont even start the burn, it'll come up with a couple of errors just after the "bitsetting set to drive default" message.

Hopefully someone has an idea about what I can do, below is the error message incase anyone understands them.

Thanks

Maybe updating to 6.6.0.16 could help, but posting it in the BENQ section would give you probably better answers...

Re: Burning dvds freeze at 1% + nero error message

Assuming your drive is connected via the MB IDE controller, what driver is in use? If it's anything other than the default MS driver, (Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller), then change it to that. This certainly looks like a driver conflict.

Re: Burning dvds freeze at 1% + nero error message

Right Click on the "VIA Busmaster" entry under the IDE controller, select update driver on the driver pane, then direct it to display a list of known drivers. Choose the "Standard Dual Channel PCI-IDE controller".
Then reboot and confirm it has been installed.

Re: Burning dvds freeze at 1% + nero error message

I have since done some more testing, uninstalling Nero, using dvd decrypter to burn, changing the IDE controllers. I still have the problems.

I made a thread over in the BenQ area, I'm a little more descriptive now because I've tried a few more things.

Unless you remove the VIA IDE controller driver, you're wasting your time troubleshooting anything else. Start with the basics.

I changed to the one you suggested before, that didn't help.

If I uninstall the controller and reboot it'll just install the original one again.

Theres not that much I can do with the IDE controller before I run out of options there.

Go to add/remove programs and look for the VIA busmaster driver. If you find it there, uninstall that. I'm 75% sure that this driver is the source of your trouble.

Re: Burning dvds freeze at 1% + nero error message

Ok, drivers arn't installed in the add/remove programs area.

But if i go to device manager I can select which driver to install. I've tried the normal one that windows wants to use ( the MS one I beleive ), i've tried the Standard dual channel like you suggested, still problems.

About to try the VIA one, but this doesn't seem to be helping any.

Re: Burning dvds freeze at 1% + nero error message

Thanks for the responses, but I think its hardware related now.

A couple of hours ago I went back to do some more testing, the drive wouldn't even open, and when I tried to eject the drive from My Computer, the computer would freeze up.

Figuring it was more likely hardware with this information I swapped drives with my friend. His drive burnt 4 disk's fine in my computer, and my drive started up fine in his, but once we tried to burn something it froze up and we were un-able to eject the media.

Will have to send it back I guess. Thanks for the help.
