| All burns error out with "Sector has different content to source" Ok, I've been fighting this problem for the last couple days and it's driving me nuts. I can't seem to find a solution and nothing I do seems to make it any better. I've spent several days reading threads at various forums and still don't have a solution, so I'm HOPING someone can help me out here. Whenever I burn a DVD (right now, I'm trying to back up some FLAC audio files to free up some space on my music server), the burn completes successfully. However, the verification ALWAYS fails. Sometimes at the end, sometimes in the middle, it's not predictable. I've read a lot of people saying that Nero's verification isn't reliable, so I went to the trouble of copying the files BACK off the DVD on to my HD, and did a binary compare (using comp). Without fail, one or more files will have a compare error (depends on how many sector errors I get how many files are bad). So Nero does seem to be finding an actual problem. I've tried 3 types of media, on the chance that it was a media problem. (Imation, Sony, and Memorex--the Imation media is a year or so old). I've tried two different drives, my original LiteOn SOHW-1693S (EIDE) and a Samsung SH-S183 (SATA). I even did a memtest86 on my machine after reading that someone had a problem with his memory that caused this (mine passed). I've tried two different versions of Nero, 6 something, and 7.9.6.0 (which I'm using right now). The last Nero log file I have is from burning to an Imation (tired of coastering the more expensive Sony discs). The Lite-On drive USED to work fine, even burning Imation discs. However, last winter I upgraded my machine, and I don't think I've burned a successful DVD since then (I don't think I tried until a couple weeks ago). The upgrade consisted of new mobo/proc/ram, and new HDs (moved to serial ATA). So I'm not ruling out a problem with the current hardware. In fact, I've had some strange bluescreens that I've not been able to track down while copying from my D: drive to my C: drive (nvata ports 3 and 4 in the log file, WDC WD3200KS-00PFB0). I assumed it was a D: drive problem since it never happened as long as I didn't mess with the D: drive. I am starting to think that I might be mistaken. I've not gotten any blue screens while burning DVDs, but I'll post the ones I have gotten in the past just in case they are relevent. It's always been one of these three when it dies: 0x0000004E: PFN_LIST_CORRUPT (very rare, only gotten this once or twice) 0x00000050: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (uncommon) 0x00000077: KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR (common) Here's the Nero Log file: Code: (Name withheld to protect the guilty) (Serial # deleted) Windows XP 5.1 IA32 WinAspi: - NT-SPTI used Nero Version: 7.9.6.0 Internal Version: 7, 9, 6, 0 Recorder: <TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S183L>Version: SB01 - HA 1 TA 1 - 7.9.6.0 Adapter driver: <IDE> HA 1 Drive buffer : 2048kB Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ? | Re: All burns error out with "Sector has different content to source" Hi Zaragon, welcome to CDFreaks! ![]() I suggest replacing your current IDE cable with another 80-wire cable and make sure it's properly attached at both ends. I also suggest (temporarily) disabling any overclocking you may have on your system.

This is likely to be a problem with the driver for your Nvidia IDE controller chip. Or as DrageMester said, it could be a bad cable. DMA is enabled for the Plextor CD-R drive. Is this connected to a separate controller? |

| Re: All burns error out with "Sector has different content to source" DrageMaster, Thanks for the welcome! The new Samsung DVD burner is SATA, and it came with a new cable, which I'm using. The old Lite-on was EIDE and was running off the same cable as the Plextor. Does this eliminate the cable as the problem, no. I could have gotten a bum SATA cable with the new drive. But it makes it less likely to be the problem, I think. I was overclocked by 5% (210Mhz bus instead of 200MHz bus). I have disabled this in the BIOS. But since you mentioned it, I rechecked using CPU-Z, and it's still overclocked. I am going to investigate why this is when I get back home later today. It looks like it might be related to the Gigabyte EZTune software. Skelton, Yes, it is a separate controller. The Plextor drive is EIDE. The hard drives and the DVD burner are SATA. I can't find a way to adjust the DMA settings on the SATA controller. The EIDE controller is easy, it's under the advanced tab. Any suggestions? This is an nForce based Gigabyte board M59SLI-S5. I can post up the output from CPU-Z if y'all think it will help. Thanks! |

| Re: All burns error out with "Sector has different content to source" Oops! I didn't notice that you mentioned SATA for the Samsung drive. That makes my IDE cable suggestion irrelevant. There are many reports of people having trouble when using a combination of NVIDIA drivers and optical drives, so you could try removing the NVIDIA drivers for the storage controllers and using default Microsoft drivers instead. |

| Re: All burns error out with "Sector has different content to source" Ok, I've had another frustrating evening of fighting with this thing. I reverted back to the Microsoft drivers for the IDE controllers, and spent about 30 minutes beating my head against the wall trying to figure out why the computer was overclocked everytime I booted in to windows. It turned out that the nVidia nTune which was overclocking my video card ALSO saved for the overclocking for the processor. On top of that, I noticed that sometimes it was booting BIOS version F5 and sometimes it was booting BIOS version F7. Turns out that when I flashed to F7, I forgot to update the backup BIOS. And for some OTHER reason, it would randomly boot the backup BIOS (not sure why). So I flashed the backup BIOS to F7 and the problem's fixed, and now it boots F7 every time. So, now I have the overclocking disabled, the right BIOS version booting, and the Microsoft drivers installed. That fixed the DMA showing as off. That's all it did. In fact, the next burn I did had a LOT more errors than normal. Oddly enough, CDs seem to burn fine, even in the DVD drive. Here's the failed DVD burn: Code: Windows XP 5.1 IA32 WinAspi: - NT-SPTI used Nero Version: 7.9.6.0 Internal Version: 7, 9, 6, 0 Recorder: <TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S183L>Version: SB01 - HA 1 TA 1 - 7.9.6.0 Adapter driver: <IDE> HA 1 Drive buffer : 2048kB Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ? | Re: All burns error out with "Sector has different content to source" Hi all, Been outta town, was hoping someone had some sort of suggestion, since this is driving me nuts. I'm not sure why CDs burn fine but DVDs won't burn right no matter what I do. I'm going to try booting a linux or BSD boot CD and see if I have any luck there. It would at least narrow it down to hardware or software. |

| Re: All burns error out with "Sector has different content to source" OK, no luck on the linux boot CD. Plus I had my very first CD burn fail while burning the Knoppix disc. Sigh. I've done a bunch more testing, and I'm pretty sure at this point that Nero isn't the culprit. Something in my computer's flipping bits, and I'm having a devil of a time tracking it down. Anyhow, I'm going to repost this over to the general hardware forum as soon as I get some more data. |

| Re: All burns error out with "Sector has different content to source" That's a thought. I haven't had time to run it more than an hour two at a go (passed the full test both times). I'll probably set my machine up running it when I go to bed. Oddly enough, I think I've finally determined what's happening (but not the why, or what component is at fault). It looks like bits are being randomly "flipped" when they cross the bus from device to device. What I normally did was copy the files from the "bad" DVD to the HD that the original files were on, and then run an fc /b to compare the files. This usually pointed out a few bytes that were different. Same ones every time I ran the compare. What I did yesterday was use fc to compare the files DIRECTLY from the DVD to the HD. This time, sometimes a file would not match on the first test, and match on the second. As a quick example, I'd get the following outputs from FC: Quote:
