X2 - The Threat. Can't create virtual image. - Club CDFreaks

G'day all,

Well I just got my copy of "X2 - The Threat", and I want to run from a virtual image, rather than handle the CD. However, I've just learned with ClonyXXL, that the CD uses the dreaded StarForce 3 protection.

I've tried to create an image with BlindWrite 5.0.2, however the topology extraction fails. The log entry is below:

I have read in other forums ( Daemon-Tools & Alcohol 120% ), that it's near impossible to get a working image that will run with Daemon Tools 3.41. So I guess I'm outta luck, since all I want to do is play from the virtual image, not create a new CD.

At this stage all I can do is plead with the BlindWrite, Alcohol and Daemon Tools teams to see if they can't nut something out.

if you read around the forum you'll see that work on starforce 3 is going on strong.

you can try, if you want to make an image (with bw 4.5.7 if topology fails in bw5) then disconnect all the optical drives from the computer. some users have reported that it helps

DAMN!! That's what I figured.

Good thing my main games rig only has 1 CD drive, on the secondary IDE channel, with nothing else on that channel. So a quick trip to the BIOS would fix that. ( I keep my HDD's and CD/DVD drives on separate channels when at all possible. )

...but really guys, there HAS to be a better way.

I don't want to think that I spent all this money on software like Alcohol and Blindwrite, only to be facing a copy protection that renders these titles all but useless, unless I start disabling parts of my computer to get the virtual images to run. It's just not right.

Thanks for your advice, though. I hope a breakthrough is soon found.

thats how its always going to be.
new copy protections comes out which nobody can copy. after some time someone finds a way to copy and the copy companies implant it inn their software. now we have the possible to copy that protection, but since it has been broken, a new protection comes out.

after what i've heard starforce 3 is already kinda half broken. you just have to wait
