copyToDvd says "Cannot connect to hardware access layer"

My computer recently contracted the Sony DRM rootkit from one of their XCP cd's, several trojans were able to attack and though AVG caught them i temporarily lost both my cd and dvdroms in Dev Manager. As soon as I got rid of DRM rootkit I got back the use of both drives but now Copy To Dvd gives a message when I try to open the program "cannot connect to hardware access layer" I uninstalled it(and 1Click DVD Copy as well as they both came in a bundle) + reinstalled them. But still get that message. Both rom drives play games and videos just fine. I just cant burn any cd's now. Has anyone ever heard of this before? Does anyone have any ideas? I even uninstalled the rom drivers and updated them but this did not help either. Help Please! Thanks for your consideration, hanaleia

Reinstall the software and retest, if you get the same error post the contents of the pcsetup.log file from the My Documents>PcSetup folder.

Re: copyToDvd says "Cannot connect to hardware access layer"

At the time there was a lot of info about Sony's Rootkit, and how if you tried to remove it you would trash your discs or even make your system unbootable. Without knowing how you removed it, it's a bit difficult to tell what damage you have done. It might now be a case of having to wipe the disc and reinstall the OS.

The only other thing you can do is a lot of searching on the web and newsgroups to see if anyone else has had this problem and has found a fix that you can use.

Re: copyToDvd says "Cannot connect to hardware access layer"

thanks so much for your consideration I followed your advice and got the same message, also 1 click dvd says no dvd devices were detected or may not be installed properly. Device manager has all my roms as working, however in device manager under vso all the patin couffin devices have a large yellow exclamation point.
I have attached the pcsetuplogfile
Gaius Baltar(love that show by the way)
I used sony's (supposedly) latest, safest removal tool.(XCP2uninstaller) Darn Sony!
A fresh reinstall is my last choice as I am not real sure how to not lose all my games data and other valuable data. Esp since I cant burn anything now. If I have to go that route I will definately be posting some extra questions thanks for your patience

Reinstall the Pattin-Couffin driver.

Re: copyToDvd says "Cannot connect to hardware access layer"

Thanks for your reply. I uninstalled (and reinstalled them)several times and every time I still have big yellow exclamation points in device manager and copy to dvd still says the same thing. I also just tried sfc /scannow. After it was thru I uninstalled the Ide channel drivers. It fixed another problem caused by the rootkit but not this one. In device Manager when I click on the patin coufin engine under VSO devices, Properties says "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)" how can that be it shows up in device Manager? However, 1 click dvd copy still wont recognize my burner as a source or dvd43 as a decryptor. Hmmm. I am stumped, everything else on my system seems to be back in top working order. At the VSO website an FAQ has this Question and Answer
Q: What do I do when I get this message: "Can't connect to hardware access layer: Patin-Couffin or ASPI layer"?
A: You may need to force the installation of the Patin Couffin drivers. Make sure you have Administrator access rights on your computer. Some registry entries must be created in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE section of the registry and this requires administrator rights.

Do you understand what this means or how to force an install and what entries need to be changed in the registry? Do you suppose a repair of XP Pro would help? I have attached the newest log

Re: copyToDvd says "Cannot connect to hardware access layer"

I downloaded and installed the latest version of 1click dvd copy 4.2.9.13.( I thought i had the latest.) I uninstalled the patin couffin drivers using start-programs-vso-patin couffin drivers-uninstall etc restarted the computer then reinstalled the drivers and now CopyToDvd works fine. I had been uninstalling them right out of device manager. I checked the logfile and they are up to date, I find this odd since the patin couffin drivers in Device manager still have the yellow exclamation point on all of them. However 1 click dvd now wont even open and it says
"No dvd devices were detected, Its possible that the dvd device driver is not properly installled. The Program will close now and atttept to reinstall the device drivers. If you get this message after restarting the program contct customer support." When I close it it attempts to install but the next time i open I get the same thing.
Should I have uninstalled the old versions first I wonder?? Anyway I am getting closer to fixing the mess sony left me with. darn Sony
Thanks for any other thoughts or ideas on this. Much appreciated!

Re: copyToDvd says "Cannot connect to hardware access layer"

Download Filter Driver Load Order v1.0.006 and check what lower filters are installed. If any of these filter drivers are deleted improperly, it can disable your optical drives.

http://www.bustrace.com/downloads/free_utilities.htm

In the registry, the cdrom devices are listed in :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\

usually the fifth guid (mine is {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318})

I just delete the 0000 key and rescan for hardware changes in Device Manager.
