convertxtodvd - i must be doing something stupid

i'm trying to convert a blu-ray rip MKV file to DVD format using convertxtodvd.

it works fine up to a point - the file is converted, and if i open the directory it creates in the VLC media player, it plays fine with sound and picture and everything.

but when i burn it to a DVD, i lose the sound every time when i play it on my dvd recorder!

if i use nero express to burn the dvd format disc, or even if i run it through nero recode, it loses the sound.

admittedly, i haven't tried the inbuilt burning option on convertx, but that's only because it keeps telling me i need a dual layer disk (which i don't have) because the dvd structure overshoots the required space by about 600mb.

am i doing something stupid or forgetting a setting ? (see what i did there ? )

any help would be greatly appreciated .. cheers

Run one of the VOB's through Gspot and see what it says for audio.

i'll give that a go - thanks.

i'm just wondering if it's anything to do with the blu-ray rip having 6 channel DTS or something like that ..

but i'll try gspot though and see what happens

Re: convertxtodvd - i must be doing something stupid

i ran gspot on vts_01_1.vob of the conversion, and the info field in the audio section says the codec is DTS and also has this ..

Quote:
0xbd[0x88]:48000Hz 1536 kb/s tot , C + L + R + SL + SR
on my PC, it does indeed play but not on my DVD player ..

hmm, why don't you convert from DVD to DVD format instead? It's a lot easier.

Re: convertxtodvd - i must be doing something stupid

because the original file isn't in DVD format - it's an MKV file that was created by ripping a blu-ray film.

i've had to run the resulting DVD structure from convertxtodvd through nero recode to be able to burn it, so, just for the record, i ran gspot on the same VOB file of the now shrunken DVD.

DTS codec again and this info field ..

Well I would then assume you have to enable DTS, in both your player (a bit of an annoyance on mine) and receiver if it's DTS ready, although mine will sense DTS and go into the proper mode after I make the change in my player.

If you had LPCM or AC3 you would have good to go.

Re: convertxtodvd - i must be doing something stupid

i've just checked my dvd recorder and DTS mode is enabled, along with dolby digital as well.

i could probably use avidemux to convert the dvd structure to a compliant mpeg file, and and the audio stream to AC3, but i'm trying to avoid that because i'm just thinking that each time i convert it, i lose quality and the whole idea was to keep as much of the quality as possible from the blu-ray rip.

if that made sense

anyway, i think i'll give the avidemux route a try anyway and just see what happens

Re: convertxtodvd - i must be doing something stupid

it seems it's not able to decode the DTS to be able to convert it so i'll have to look for a DTS audio codec i s'pose ..

Hi,

ConvertXtoDVD does nothing to AC3 and DTS audio streams.

It just copies them, which you will see in the convertxtodvd.log

And yes, it's was I going to say, make sure the audio is not DTS since most people do not have a DTS capable system, so they hear nothing
