| Re: Convert DVD/CD to any format with less size Welcome to the forum ![]() Currently the best codec to compress movies with best quality seems to be H264, but movies compressed with this codec can be watched only on a computer (for what I know there are no standalones able to read MKV movies). This codec, moreover, requires a very powerful computer: as comparison I can say that using my Athlon 2200+ it requires about 40 minutes to convert a 5 min movie from vob (DVD format) to mkv.

| Re: Convert DVD/CD to any format with less size is there any other non-mkv formats (such as avi) that still retain the quality? what programs? Interested in converting larger vob movie files to something that my philips dvd player can read via the usb port. THanks. |

| Re: Convert DVD/CD to any format with less size Conversion ALWAYS means quality loss. I would choose xvid as target format.

| Re: Convert DVD/CD to any format with less size I did some tests and compressing the same VOB file creating a mkv (with H264 codec) and a XviD of the same file dimensions, the Xvid movie showed an ugly quality compared with the H264 compressed file.
