Scary Problem

I searched the forum and tried some things but nothing is working. I really need help. My little brother got a computer. He just got a pre-built hp. I was installing Alcohol 120 on it for him and then half way through installation, I can't say when because I was looknig away, it causes the computer to just restart and say some error occured. When in booted back up I tried to uninstall it but it said it can't be uninstalled because it was never installed in the first place, even though the icon is there on the desktop and the folder is in the Program Files. I tried going into the registry to uninstall it manually but to no avail. Every time I tried to just install it again, it would stop half way through and say there was an internal error. It seemed like I was pretty much stuck. But now I think, because alcohol was unable to complete its installation (since it creates a virtual drive), it's causing there to be other errors with other programs, so I desperately need this fixed. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

Re: Scary Problem

try to install it again (over the half installed files) then use the programs own uninstall function to completely remove it.

then install it again.

hopefully the full install then an uninstall will return teh system back to normal so you can install it successfully.

What types of problems are you encountering with other programs? I can't think of any software programs off the top of my head that a botched installation would have an effect on.

give the reinstall, full uninstall, and normal install a try and let us know how it goes.

Re: Scary Problem

it wont complete a full install because it stops the installation and says there is an internal error

Re: Scary Problem

i did a quick google and found this post http://forum.alcohol-soft.com/index.php?showtopic=20874

ther'es also an extensive FAQ accessible from that site that contains every error imaginable to mankind for alcohol. You didn't specify what type of error alcohol was giving you or if there was a specific number involved, but if there is then you'll be able to find it on that site.

try the manual uninstall method in the post I linked to. seems like uninstalling alcohol is a rather common problem. (at least over on that forum)

Re: Scary Problem

Definitely try reasonsnotrules suggestion...if no resolution, I would first try a system restore with xp...it may not work but it's really a pretty harmless process to attempt. If still no luck, hp has a recovery application...actually two - #1 called a non-destructive recovery...had to do this twice with my wife's older hp (worked both times). HP claims an 80 % success with this, ie., no data loss. If it fails, at worst, your brother's hp will revert to the state in which he received it. #2 is called a destuctive recovery and will again, revert the hp.

I hope this helps, good luck and let us know...

Re: Scary Problem

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. The link with the error FAQ looks like it might guide me out of this. And if not then recovery is a reasonable alternative since he just bought it.

Re: Scary Problem

switch off automatic restart under system properties, try installing again now if there is a problem a BSOD should occur, send minidump (windows\minindump) to support_team@alcohol-soft.com with any error messages that you recieve.
