No Alcohol is not yet available on CD, you need to download it from the download site www.alcohol-software.com
You can naturally put the install.exe onto a Disc for safe keeping so that you can reinstall at anytime if you need to.

Erm, why? It's not exactly a big download. I just download and reinstall it again when I need to. Yes I wipe my system a lot due to testing a project I'm working on.

mikano: And you can download it as many times as you wish. Using your personal password you will have access to the download area, and there you can download the Retail version as many times as you wish

Nop, you can always download the retail version as long you're a registered user. When you order and pay it you will receivce a personal login a password which gives access to the retail download. You can see it at the download page, at the left.

How long do you stay a registered user? Another words, is it pay once and all future upgrades free?

It is supposed to be that way but bear in mind that this can always happen, I bought fantom cd 2 days before the developers left and created alcohol, this left a very bad taste in my mouth because, well you can see why, but this is always a chance you take. Besides why should he have to always log in clone, cd-mate, nero, roxio just to name a few know whether or not you are entitled to an upgrade.

i ask myself if there are any rules about (free) upgrades.

upgrades are normally bug fixes...that means that the software wasn't that good when you bought it. (or didn't do it job as good as promised)

and it would be stupid to pay for upgrades when you buy a new burner and the software doesn't support it at the moment.

on the other side the programmers need money to keep developing.

upgrades are free for life for registered users. upgrades are not only bug fixes but also program enhancements. when a new type of copy protection comes out and the software needs to be modified to handle it do you call that a 'bug'?

there are also many additions currently being worked on for alcohol, including premastering, audio cd creation, and vcd conversion and burning. these additions will be available as plugins and will most likely not be available in the trial version.

and as you mention upgrades are constantly needed to support newly released hardware.

what i don't understand is........
being quite willing to copy protected titles, why would you pay money for the software that you use to copy said titles? wouldn't you just download it instead? And anyone saying that they are using it to make legitimate backup copies for personal use, well, pish

Kooks...

if you think like that.... i am sorry to say that you are on the wrong forum

what we try to do is making back-ups with all kinds of software...no patching or cracked exe's ...we even like to copy with out the need of emulation

we just want to beat every protection...because it is our right to have the back-ups

that is why it is called cd-freaks...we do not want the easy way

Well put. Also these upgrades are sometimes speed enhancements or CPU usage enhancements. They are free for the users who purchase the software.

Alcohol updates are no differnt from firmware updates for you drive, i am sure if you paid good money for a drive you would expect firmware upgrades that would improve the preformance of your drive!! the same goes for software if you paid for it and there is an update to make it preform better then what more can you ask for.

It's a great piece of software supported by a very clever developer and a dedicated team of beta testers/translators etc
