What exactly ARE BUP and IFO files, how to get rid of trailers built in to menus?

Because of the ads in the front of movies on a disc, I'm trying to rid myself of them on my back ups, making the copy more enjoyable than the original!

They don't register as normal movie files, so must be classified as menus... I preview the files once copied to my hard drivewith Cyberlink DVD and erase the ads/warnings that are menus.

I'm wondering if I should also be erasing the IFO and VOB files that correspond with the files themselves - ones that have the same names, e.g. I erase VTS_04_1.VOB, so I also have to erase VTS_04_1_0.IFO and VTS_04_1_0.BUP? is it a good idea to erase both of these also, is it harmful or does it make no difference either way?

Also, I'm having trouble finding the trailers for Scooby Doo 2 - my technique doesn't work, I've just got rid of a warning... does anyone know any other ways of seeking them out and getting rid of them on awkward movies like this?

If you use Any DVD select "Remove Annoying Adverts and Trailers". Otherwise just copy Titles Only. I wouldnt recommend removing IFO's and BUP's you think correspond to the Trailers and Ads if your copying the whole disc. The Movie and Menu IFO's may make reference to them.

I didn't know AnyDVD could do that, I'll go and check that out right now, thanks!

And I won't touch the BUPs or IFOs!

Use Vob Blanker. My method:

1. Rip with AnyDVD and/or DVD Decrypter.
2. Scan through with DVD Shrink. I only use this because I am comfy with the interface and it's easy to see what each and every title is.
3. Use Vob Blanker to kill the titles I don't want.
4. RE-scan with DVD Shrink. See if it's small enough now to use Shrink on it.
5. If not, use DVD Rebuilder.

End of process.

Yeah, I've got to get to grips with VOB Blanker - it seems quite daunting but I suppose it's the only way. Thanks!

vob blanker is actually very easy to use, but if you want a program that has more features and is easier to use, try looking into dvdremake or dvdremake pro.

Re: What exactly ARE BUP and IFO files, how to get rid of trailers built in to menus?

VOB Blanker is only difficult if you try to use the features that are esoteric. I use it for basic title removal.

I figure out which titles to remove using DVD Shrink. It's just easier that way. I make a note of which ones.

Then I fire up VOB Blanker. Now remember the disc is already ripped to a folder. So what I do is I load it in VOB Blanker, then I check "use input directory". Then I flip through the listed titlesets. What you want to focus on is the BOTTOM WINDOW. You'll see...

PGC #, TTN, T IN VMG

The third one (T IN VMG) is the actual title number. Now, things to remember.

1. If a particular titleset has no titles you're removing, mark it as skip (in the titleset window - the top one).
2. DO NOT try to process multi-angle or interleaved titles, unless you're removing the entire titleset.
3. Don't fiddle with the other settings. You're either marking titles as "blank", or marking titlesets as "process" or "skip". That's ALL. Beyond that you need a tutorial and some bravery.
4. When all the titles are marked, hit "process". On my machine (XP 3200+) it takes maybe 2 seconds to do the entire process. Maybe longer if I'm only banking partial titlesets and they're complex.

That's it. Pretty easy.

OMG, OMG, OMG - you are THE man. It's really easy - I know it's free and so I can't grumble, but I wish that it was set out like most software so that the straightfoward functions are easy to use - like DVD Decrypter for example.

Really, really - thanks. As well as those ads, I'm going to be stripping all of the crappy warnings out of my DVD back-ups now, thanks!

Re: What exactly ARE BUP and IFO files, how to get rid of trailers built in to menus?

OK, OK - new question. I've tried to blank an anti-piracy ad thats wasting my precious compression space, as well as a copyright warning, but they don't come up in Blanker AT ALL - they register as Title 1, same as the movie when you play them and I've checked the movie out in Blanker but they're not there there, and in DVD Shrink they register as 'unspecified', then 'menu' are numbered 3-21. The title's 'Dodgeball' - any takes on this?

They're most likely IN the menus. You can use one of the popular menu editing programs, but be careful, there is some tricksy stuff that they do with linking to make this stuff painful to remove. It's not rocket science, but it involves being careful.

Re: What exactly ARE BUP and IFO files, how to get rid of trailers built in to menus?

Browse through the different title sets; they will be in there somewhere. Also VobBlanker will warn you if blanking a PGC in a title-set will interfere with playback commands or button functionality. If this is the case, you can then double-click on the PGC to get to the cells within the PGC and blank them only. This keeps the command structure intact while allowing removal of the annoying video or still section.

Regards

Re: What exactly ARE BUP and IFO files, how to get rid of trailers built in to menus?

Thanks guys, it's OK. I double-clicked the menu files rather than the standard VOBs and it brought up a new menu showing various things, and it was in there.

Job done, thanks!

Re: What exactly ARE BUP and IFO files, how to get rid of trailers built in to menus?

i use DvdReMake Pro to blank out any unwanted stuff from my back-ups.
and to take out any buttons that might lead to the stuff i took out.
then use your favorite Compressor ( DVD Squeez, DVD2One, 1-Click DVD, Instant Copy) to get it to the right size.

Yea I guess - Maybe if you used the word Delphic or Orphic I'd be sold on your greek Heritage. We tend to steer clear of all Cross-Dressing English down under, we use words like Hard, Tough and sometimes when we feel adventurous we might use a word like Com-pli-ca-ted. (I need to spell it phonetically)
Sorry groovemeister I'll go away now. (my wifes due to give birth soon and I've gone a bit crazy)
