question about converting PAL dvd to NTSC or ??

I have a Metallica concert on dvd(it was a tv broadcast, not copywritten material),and a girl in the UK sent it to me, and when I copied it with Nero express, it wouldn't play in my standalone player, but plays fine on my computer, with working menus, everything. I got a message on my tv that said disc is PAL, and can't be played. I remember trying to copy it another way a long time ago with nero, and it said it was transcoding the files, or something like that, and the remaining time was 3 or 4 hours, if I remember correctly. I don't know if that's normal, and I'm still learning some of this stuff, so figured it's just as easy to ask...........what is the best way to make a copy of this PAL dvd and convert it to NTSC(hope that's right), so that I can watch it on my tv, and use the menus and whatnot. Thanks in advance, and any help greatly appreciated.

Re: question about converting PAL dvd to NTSC or ??

I do not think Nero will convert from one format to other. There is ConvertXtoDVD software which will do it, but not sure if it will convert full DVD with menus or just main feature.
It is free to try.
You can do PAL to NTSC with menus and all, but it is a long process, it will require re authoring DVD.
There are players on the market which will play PAL to NTSC TV. OPPO is one of them.

Nero vision will convert it to NTSC and then there is DVD Flick, which is free.

Will it convert it with full menus and everything or is that where DVD Flick comes in?

Re: question about converting PAL dvd to NTSC or ??

As far as I know, there are no programs that will automatically convert menus between PAL and NTSC, and to do it manually is an incredibly complicated undertaking. It would be far easier to create your own new menus; it would be even easier than that to buy a new multisystem and region-free (or can be hacked to become region-free) DVD player that can play PAL DVDs while outputting an NTSC signal. Even good ones can be had for relatively little now.

AZImmortal is right. I didn't read your original post close enough and thought you were working with an .avi. You can get an DVD player from wallyworld that will play both PAL and NTSC for $50 depending on what you want to spend.

I'm sure there are others to choose from, this is just the first one I looked at. Some may even upconvert.

Re: question about converting PAL dvd to NTSC or ??

Well, it's not important enough to just go out and buy another dvd player just for this one concert.......I can still watch it on my computer. The hacking of either of my current dvd players would definitely be an option for me, if you know where I can get the info on how to do that. I have a Denon DVM-1815, and a Toshiba HD-A2. I appreciate the feedback!

I hate to ask, but it looks like I would use the second choice here, correct?

And, after I download it to my computer, would you have any idea how I get it on my player. I've updated the player via the interenet. so it must be similar, but this is new to me.

Just hacking the player will not do too much for you. This will get rid of the region, it will not make a player to convert from PAL to NTSC.

This link here
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks/toshiba-hd-a2/7554
shows a firmware that appears to make the player the european version, which does play PAL, according to the research I did. But I could be way off here, because this sure isn't something I'm familiar with at all.

All I can say, try it and see. Lots of people mix region with television standard, but I could be wrong.

I might try it.....not sure yet. Would you happen to know how this is done,as I have never done it. I've heard people burn the file to a dvd and do it that way, but I could be totally wrong. Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

Re: question about converting PAL dvd to NTSC or ??

I am not sure what you want to try?
Do you want to hack your DVD player or convert DVD?
If you want to hack the player, I could not help you there, I have never done it and would not do it since it is not guaranteed and player may not work any more.
You have original DVD as you said in your first post.
If it play on your computer, than the region matches to that of your DVD player or disc is region free. If you are in US you are region 1 and your computer DVD player/burner is also region 1. Same for your stand alone player.
If you want to convert DVD to NTSC with menu and all, this is the site to read.

http://forum.videohelp.com/topic3001...77cd2a5fdc56a5

If you want to convert main feature only then ConvertXtoDVD or other software will do it, Nero Vision may do it also.
If the DVD is protected, than you have to rip it to your HD first, in that case RipIt4Me (free) or AnyDVD will do.

Re: question about converting PAL dvd to NTSC or ??

I was thinking of trying hacking the DVD player, since I'm going through the hassle of coverting it from PAL to NTSC.........isn't important enough. The hacking sounds risky, and unless someone tells me it's no big deal, and most of the time causes no problems, I probably won't try that either.

From what I can gather, you need to install both firmwares (the first one first and the second one second). The first will convert your player to the European version, and the second one will make it region free. As far as installing the firmwares go, I believe they're ISO files, so you need to burn the images onto a disc (not as data, but as an image; ImgBurn can do this for you) and then inserting them into your player should do the trick. Try doing it with a CD-RW or DVD+/-RW so that you don't waste a disc. This is a routine way of updating firmware on DVD players.

I know this sounds like a stupid question, but obviously I would burn each of these 2 files to a separate disc, complete the first one, and then do the second one, right?

Yes, you do them separately, but you don't necessarily need two separate discs if you use an RW. With an RW, you can burn the first firmware onto it, install it onto your player, and then burn the second firmware onto it, and repeat.
