maximum compression and high resolution

i have a dvd movie that is 1:55:05 in length that i am wanting to copy/rip to mpeg, avi, or wmv media format, and then burn that one video file to one standard CD-R for personal archives. i will be using a 700mb disc, and possibly saving approximately 10mb of that space for a codec installer, if needed. when the media file is created, i want it to be in the highest resolution, compression, and frame rate possible for the allotted cdr space, to eliminate boxy, pixelated graphics. i do not however want to create a basic dvd to dvd copy. dvd to cd-r only.

now i have tried several dvd copy programs and several codecs, and i just cant figure how to set the copy paramaters so that my end resulting file is 690mb or less, or just less than 700 if no particular codec is required outside the standard windows install. all i tend to end up with is a file thats over 1gb in size.

is there any way to have high resolution and high compression with this projects characteristics?

thanks much

Re: maximum compression and high resolution

it would help if you mentioned what program(s) you've already tried. if your aim is to backup a dvd to cd and don't care what codec you use, i'd suggest using Auto Gordian Knot, which is a simple gui for compressing to xvid. you can set the size of the output that you want.

Re: maximum compression and high resolution

well ive used intervideo dvd copy. -its output file wasnt desirable. another is #1 dvd ripper, and the file size was too big. i dont really care about the codec i use, as long as i would just be able to install the codec, and the codec only, without special players, etc. it would have to be a codec that is compatible with windows media player, and its installer would fit on the same disc as the movie. is xvid compatible with windows media player, and how close to original content would the copy be in picture quality and still fit just under 700mb?
