Help! Burner Does Not Burn

Hi y'all,

I've got a serious problem here. My Samsung writemaster (external) does not seem to copy DVD files any longer, ever since a couple of months ago. Funny thing is my burner does play DVDs normally, music (it even burns it), whatever, but it fails when it comes to DVD burning. I don’t know what could have happened but I think I already tried it all: changing blank DVDs brand, updating software (nero + shrink + DVD Region Free+CSS), updating firmware (funny, sometimes while doing this it says the firmware does not correspond to the device, sometimes it says the firmware is the latest version though), burning at a lower speed, trying another burning software (1copyDVDpro), BUT NOTHING, it just won’t go. The problem comes up when I put a blank DVD into the burner, and this is preparing to start burning. This happens no matter whether I previously compressed the files (with the DVDShrink) or just plainly go to for an exact copy of the original DVD. So, to wrap up, it reads, plays, writes (to hard drive), allows compression, but DOES NOT BURN.

Here I attach the two last readouts I got from Nero after the burnings failed. I hope any of you guys can disentangle them as to get some clue as where to look. I’m just beginning to think that it might be a hardware/firmware thing.

Thanx in advance for your time,

Pablo

Re: Help! Burner Does Not Burn

If It's out of warranty, shut down and remove it,
open it up, look for a small lense in the middle.
this is the laser...
take a cotton swap and just dampen it, don't soak it and gently clean the lense..
you prob won't see and dirt but it's there be it cig smoke, dust, schmootz or whatever.

I have saved 2 Plextor burners the same way as I was about to toss them for not burning or reading..
Worth a try before deep sixing it..

Re: Help! Burner Does Not Burn

Thank you guys for all your suggestions, but it didnt seem to work (I didnt open up my burner yet, and not willing to since warranty has not expired).

Remember that the problem turns up solely while burning, and that I have a laptop and an external burner (samsung), and this burning problem appeared a couple of months ago with no apparent reason. Below, my last burning log from a failed attempt (which actually got to 12% of the movie burned):

Re: Help! Burner Does Not Burn

Try turning off any apps that you do not need to burn(anti-virus, antispyware, etc.)Or get more memory, burning uses a lot of memory 1GB should be the minimum.

Besides, other logs (see above) show values on the 100-130 range. Would that be considered little too? Thanks

Re: Help! Burner Does Not Burn

Yes, To do good burns you need at least 50% free with a usb drive or it bottlenecks and fails. Also if you have not already burn at no more than 8x.

Ok, I tried shutting down all redundant apps while burning but the free PM does not get any better (63MB), and I'm still using up 87% of memory. How do I free further memory??? Another thing, it's hard to believe my usual free PM has radically changed overnight 2 months ago, when clean burnings were rife!!!

Thanks again. Here, let me post my last log (which got to 14% of the movie burned):

Re: Help! Burner Does Not Burn

Look in the task manager to see what is running, Xp sp2 should only be using about 30% of installed ram, how much space is left on your hard drive and have you defragmented lately?

I have 30 Gb free and tried a couple of times to defrag but didnt let me...a windows blue-f***g-screen error pops up. BTW, It says it has to be defraged (a lot of red around)

Re: Help! Burner Does Not Burn

Ok, here's what I tried:

1. Ran AVG (funny, lately AVG fails to do a proper update sometimes) and Ad-aware in safe mode. It turned out as if it was not safe mode: either the computer got stuck when scan was well advanced, or stopped suddenly with the typical blue screen (same as in normal mode).
2. Ran trendmicro on line and ended up with that blue screen again (said something about KERNEL_INPACKAGE and then restarted alone), also it was way advanced in the scan.

Every time I start my computer (when most programs are shut down) I go to task manager to check the PM level: it never gets past 180Mb (out of 512), which is appox. 35%. One should expect values around 50% when at a standstill. Of course, when I start opening programs it goes down to 100Mb (20%). Shall we diagnose virus then?

Re: Help! Burner Does Not Burn

The fact that you can not run (successfully) any anti-anything or defragment the hard drive leads me to believe there are only 2 things to try.
1. restore the system to a time before this all started.
2.save all your files and reload the operation system.
If system restore will not work try it in safe mode.
let me know how it goes.

The only problem is your burner.

chef, How would a external burner not allow him to run antivirus, antispyware, and defragment his drive and have his system crash?

Re: Help! Burner Does Not Burn

Guess what, I checked my burner on my girlfriend's pc and remembered then how well it used to burn. It worked, neatly. My girlfriend's pc works with 1024 Mb RAM, which doubles mine. So when burning, the PM counter stood at 550 Mb used (approx) out of 1024, which is nearly 50%. On the other hand, my pc stands right now (with few other appls open than the explorer) at the range of 120-160 Mb, out of 512 Mb, which is far less than 50%. I'd find it curious, if it weren't for the fact that I truly believe something (evil) is moving in the backstage and eating up too much memory. Some suggestion before I format my HD? (Funny also, the fact that my pc works fine - a little bit slow sometimes - yet does not allow my to defrag or run any scan properly - only hijackthis and spybot worked but found nothing)

Re: Help! Burner Does Not Burn

you have so much stuff loading at bootup there's probably some conflicts going on, windoze is getting corrupt

nero 7.0 was a joke

usb is a system intensive interface

try to use msconfig and add/remove programs to get control of your computer back

I have recently started using a new technique suggested by a global moderator at bleeping computer, he's a windows security MSMVP

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...dpost&p=634701

print these instructions and follow them exactly

this procedure will identify most heavy duty hidden virus and malware
