HELP! 10-DL Coasters! see detailed post

OS: WinXP pro SP2 w/ all updates
ODD: NEC ND-3550a 1.06
HDD: C:\(FAT32) 10GB free (50% free) Defragged
E:\(NTFS) 45GB free (50% free) Defragged
(Both are partitions of same physical drive)
Softwares:
Nero 6.6.1.4
DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0
DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15
Media:
Verbatim DVD+R DL MKM 001 (000) UPC#0 2394295166 7
(Besides reading this is "the best" DL media, it's also "recommended media" for my drive supposedly capable of 8x)
Movies:
"The Island" 2005
"King Kong" 2005

I been at this for 3 solid days now. Been searching forums, making changes, etc. Nothing working. 10 DL Coasters so far. Can't afford to make any more. All softwares are still on "default" settings I'm pretty sure. Some of the changes I've made to my system so far include: Removed all Roxio software and ran RoxiZap, Cleaned Registry with AceLogix RegTuneup, Updated Firmware on the drive, installed the latest version DVD-D. I've tried writing at different speeds to no avail, but I'm sticking with 2.4x until I get this working. Please understand that I can burn SL all day no problem. I sucessfully burned King Kong to SL this morning using DVD Shrink and DVD-D. I'll admit I'm pretty new to the entire burning scene because I didn't really have an interest in it until DL came out. I've probably burned less than 100 disks of ANY kind, so this could be something very simple that I over-looked. I guess I'll post some error information here to "help you help me" as much as I can. The following are from DVD-Decrypter, I'll just post the "interpretation" Lines to keep it simple:
Example 1
Check Condition
Write(10) - Sectors 0-31
Power Calibration Error
Example 2
Check Condition
Write(10) - Sectors 2688-2719
No Seek Complete
Example 3
Check Condition
Send DVD Structure - DVD+R DL Boundary Information
Invalid Field in Parameter List
Example 4
Check Condition
Write(10) - Sectors 1060864-1060895
No Seek Complete

As you can see the errors are coming at different times in the process so it's probably not a "layer break" only kind of thing here.
I've also tried ripping with DVD Shrink and burning with Nero and every imaginable combination using the 3 softwares I have. I usually completely delete the ISO and start over from scratch ripping a new ISO each time. At one point Nero Said something like "The ISO is over 2GB, you need to select a different compliation type that uses UDF." I have almost no idea what this meant. Here is another error log from Nero:

Re: HELP! 10-DL Coasters! see detailed post

I think power calibration issue is the main problem?

Power supply might be going bad?

As for me I hated that version of nero I use 6.6.0.18

Fat 32 might be a problem not sure on that.

I'm sure there is more knowlegable people here that can help you better.

Re: HELP! 10-DL Coasters! see detailed post

1. Do not use Nero.
2. Do not use Nero
3. See 1 and 2 above

Use DVD Decypter to create and burn the image. I'm backing King Kong up right now using DVD Decryter to create the image and Image Burn to burn it (another product from the same author). Search the forum and you should find a detailed guide on how to use DVD Decrypter for DL discs.

Other suggestion is to update your firmware to the latest from Liggy and Dee (you will find it in the NEC forum). I'm using W9 now without any issues.

Alternatively, you could goto slysoft.com and download CloneCD. You can use this excellent product to copy DL discs in one step (no need to first create the image). There is a 21 day trial. I tried this a few weeks ago with excellent results (so far I'm too cheap to buy it).

Re: HELP! 10-DL Coasters! see detailed post

I forgot to add one thing:
Once, when I used "Test Write" mode in DVD-D, it resulted in a Coaster!?!?!? I thought it wasn't supposed to write to the disk... maybe I'm just a noob.
Even stranger yet, once, all I did was put a disk in the drive, browse through some menus in DVD-D and when I came back out to the main screen, it said "Disk Not Empty." I checked the disk in Nero and yup, disk was unwritable now!?!?

Hey "Dewd" did you read my post? I've been using DVD-D, but I guess what you mean is stop "trying" Nero. Thanks for the suggestion on Liggy&Dee, I'll check into it.

Re: HELP! 10-DL Coasters! see detailed post

on your NTFS drive you could try my method:

rip with DVDD (anydvd in background) in ISO>READ mode.

this results in an iso and a .mds file. load up the .mds file in ImgBurn and you're good to go. never had a coaster (that wasn't my own fault) using this method with verbatim media.

the .mds file contains the layer break information.

You don't necessarily need NTFS to use DVD Decrypter's ISO read method. There's a setting for file splitting under the ISO read tab of the settings.

I think that by "RAM" it means the system memory.

Yeah, I just reread your post. Not much useful information in my reply. Sorry about that - haven't had much caffeine today (or the little people in my computer got to me - but that is for a different post)

Forget Nero for making backups of DL discs - use DVD Decrypter or CloneCD. And you should use the NTFS drive for the image (I know its been said but I'm just agreeing).

One more thought on this. Does the Island and King Kong have protection that gives DVD Decrypter problems? My R1 King Kong only has invalid VOBUs!. Don't know if it gives DVD Decrypter fits or not (I'm running AnyDVD).

Re: HELP! 10-DL Coasters! see detailed post

Well, I've downloaded Imgburn now and it's sitting on my desktop. I'm still afraid to try again after so much failure. Why exactly should I expect a different result? Just wanted to let you know I'm still listening for more ideas. Thanks to all who have contributed so far. I REALLY appreciate it.

@Dewd Yeah, it's been in the back of my mind that I might be using too recent of movies. Next time I'll try backing up one of my old ones. At this point I just want a sucessful burn of any kind on a DL disk. On the other hand, does that match up with the errors I'm getting? thx

Re: HELP! 10-DL Coasters! see detailed post

Because clonecd or dvddecrypter preserves the original layer break which would handle ImgBurn for example better than nero.

Re: HELP! 10-DL Coasters! see detailed post

Well, I've done as some have suggested and installed ImgBurn and AnyDVD and tried again. It seemed to make ZERO difference. This time I even tried an "older" DVD which I thought might have less up-to-date copy protections on it. The movie was "The Abyss" which I purchased several years ago. The procedure was as follows:
1.AnyDVD 5.9.4.1 is running in background
2.DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 to rip
3.ImgBurn 1.2.0.0 says "AnyDVD might interfere, make sure it's not running" so I shut down AnyDVD and reload ImgBurn
4.ImgBurn Write MDS file

Same exact error message.
[IMG][/IMG]

Here's a link to the Logs to save space. Someone please take a look if you're good at analyzing these things. I put them together in one file to make it easier, but it's really 2 separate log files. http://s37.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3...33925FAK0DTDUE

I have an address for Verbatim, I'm sending them 10 disks back hoping I can get a replacement otherwise that's $30 down the drain so far.
Thanks Again guys/gals.

Re: HELP! 10-DL Coasters! see detailed post

rip the dvd with anydvd's "Rip Video-DVD to Harddisk" option(right click the red fox in the taskbar) then use clonecd to burn. If you are using a raid set-up put anydvd in "safe mode" plus make sure you have updated the firmware for your burner.

Re: HELP! 10-DL Coasters! see detailed post

I'll chime in with an opinion here. I've been doing a bunch of DL backups lately as DL media has finally become cheap enough in my area to use on longer discs. Anyway, my method has been flawless so far...use CloneCD with AnyDVD to read and write the disc. Since CloneCD splits the DVD image files using FAT32 *shouldn't* cause a problem. I've had 0 problems and I use Verbatim +R DL media. So far, like I said, no problems at all.

I take it you're still having issues? That can't be good...I really don't have the knowledge to troubleshoot dual layer problems, unfortunately. Personally I'd probably start with the basics...is the drive running in PIO or DMA mode...do I have the latest firmware, etc. Other than that, ummmm, I'm not really sure what to tell you. I just burned another 2 discs this weekend with no problem. (Not trying to rub it in! ) Then again, I haven't tried on an NEC drive lately, so, I don't know if they have problems or not. I rather doubt it, though, as Liggy and Dee would be all over it if they did.

I have now had more than 50 successes with dual layer burns.

I have had one coaster, and it was my own fault.

Here is my method:

I use the same media you mention -- Verbatim DVD+R dual layer.

I pop in my original that I wish to make a backup copy of. I open the most recent (and final) version of DVDDecrypter. I go to the mode menu, and I set it to "ISO READ R." I also make certain the program is at default settings.

I then decrypt the entire disc. I make note of the directory where it will be stored on my hard drive.

Then, I close DVDDecrypter.

I pop in a Verbatim DVD+R DL blank disc.

I start up DVDDecrypter again. I go to the MODE menu, and I change the mode to "ISO WRITE W."

For the source directory, I navigate to the image I just created on the hard drive, and I select the .MDS file.

For the destination, I choose the DVD burner drive. I make certain the burning speed is set slow (2.4X). (I also know my system is set at DMA mode for all drives).

I then click on the large "burn" icon.

While it burns, I resist any urge to multi-task, in any way. I do not surf, I do not tempt fate, I do not even play Microsoft Hearts. These blank discs are still too expensive to risk a coaster.

When done, I am left with a dis
