Copy Movie Discuss, Exactly what happens when you compress a DVD at International Chat: Software related forum; I use DVD XCOPY Platinum (Simple Mode). This mode always compresses the DVDs to fit on one single layer disc. I was wondering if anyone knew exactly what information is lost when a DVD is compressed...ie does it become interlaced rather than progressive?...do you loose sound quality? Thanks

Re: Exactly what happens when you compress a DVD

Basically it takes some information out of the video stream to save space. The picture quality will be lower.

Re: Exactly what happens when you compress a DVD

the simplest explanation would be that transcoders/re-encoders try to remove video information that the viewer (hopefully) won't notice to lower the bitrate. it has nothing to do with interlaced/progressive, and audio streams are not normally touched unless the user opts to do so (although this is usually limited to choosing whether or not to keep the audio stream).
