Does anyone use this free software with dvd shrink?

Have been using dvd decrypter and shrink for some time now but decided to try dvd Fab Decrypter which seems to work, until I bring up the TS which will not work with dvd shrink so far...

Starts to preview the video [which I can view] and then some kind of error message..."cannot read file source etc.....
Also,
Since no more updates from the recently shut down dvd decrypter, has anyone found an alternative to use with shrink ?

Didn't the latest update to DVDFabDecrypter address the issue of DVDShrink not being able to open Fab output? I haven't tried it yet. Check for the latest version, and if that doesn't work, supposedly running it through DVDRebuilder at no compression will allow you to open with Shrink (per Cynthia at Digital Digest).

There are a couple other workarounds, but it really shouldn't be necessary if you have the latest version of DVDFabDecrypter. Good luck.

What exactly is DVD rebuilder and is this in addition to FAB?

well, I have the latest version of DVDFab and it still won't work with dvd shrink, which works flawlessy with dvd decrypt.
The preview starts in shrink for a few seconds then stop with error message similar to what I have seen here.
unable to read from directory,
unable to read etc.......

So continue using DVDDecrypter, that's what I do. [shrugs]. I ran into that problem myself with an earlier version of DVDFabDecrypter. Hmm, IIRC I was testing it with "House of Flying Daggers". The DVDRB trick didn't work in that instance, although, as you've noted, the DVDDecrypter/ DVDShrink combination works fine.

In case anyone's interested, earlier versions of DVDShrink will work with DVDFabDecrypter output. Out of curiosity, I tried DVDShrink 2.3 and 3.0beta5. As expected, Shrink would not open the VIDEO_TS.IFO and threw an error message. Those versions, however, let you choose the VTS_01.0.IFO (usually the main movie, the numbers may vary). Shrink will complain about that also, but close the error message and it will nevertheless open it. From there you have a choice, backup or reauthor. In the former case, you can retain the menu, but it will not autoplay unless you correct it in IFOEdit. (The menu will be accessible via your remote). The latter case is main movie only.

In either case, you must recreate the VIDEO_TS.IFO or video manager. When done with DVDShrink, open the files with DVDFab 0.17 freeware (NOT DVDFabDecrypter). Click "create video manager". Done. Or do it in IFOEdit.

At the risk of being repetitious, there is NO goddam reason to abandon DVDDecrypter. Hear that, everybody? It's still better than anything else out there, and if (when?) you run into a movie it can't handle, just create a protected sectors list. It ain't hard:

Yes, I agree with not abandoning Dvd decrpypt for many reasons.
Let me add also that the blue Ray/ HD disc coming "war" will take some time to smoke out the winner/loser among the public and there again are alternatives like,

over 90% of households don't even have HD Tv yet so why even buy them or rent them when they come out let alone shell out mega bucks for a new dvd player....
I'm sure netflixs will be still sending the current dvd's out for many many yrs to come...
"VHS is dead" was the slogan many yrs ago.
I , on the other hand still have a thousand movies to go from my childhood on up that I want to backup and I don't see them all replaced by the new format or recoded etc.

Yeah, I have no interest at present in replacing all my equipment/movies. Like you, I'll watch how things shake out. It's only in the last couple of years that DVD really became dominant, so now we're supposed to go to a new format already? I don't think so, and predict a lot of consumer "resistance".

That's an excellent point about the majority of households having analog TVs. What would they have to gain in going to another format? The average lifespan of a CRT is 17 years, it will be a long time before they all wear out, and people do NOT throw out TVs that are working fine. On the other hand, I have a 32" CRT HDTV and DVDs played through component outputs and progressive scan look beautiful. I don't feel I have much to gain either.

You can bet the next format will have some really tough anticopy technology. As for DVD, that horse has left the barn long ago. Bad sector protection is the best they can do now and still have the DVDs be playable on standalones. So if you feel you should be able to make backups of your own DVDs, don't worry. IIRC, the last couple updates to DVDDecrypter (before it got the kibosh) were mostly to include latest PSL files, along with a few minor improvements.

DVDs are mass market and will remain so for the foreseeable future. DVDDecrypter will be viable for the foreseeable future.

i use dvdfab alot and i have never had to use it with another proggie i.e. dvdshrink,dvd decrypt. i does it's own decoding. maybe that's your problem. just dvd all by-it-self. if it does not decode you might need the newest version. i believe it's 2.9.3.2

When you say u use Fab as a stand alone,
are you referring on the fly? disk to disk?
or does it copy to your hard drive for you to burn to a disk..

with dvdfab you choose which way you want to burn. you can go both way. either disk to disk, or disk to your harddrive.
