dvd works in pc not settop

Ok, I've read a lot of posts here and taken many suggestions but no go. I burn dvd's in my pc and some of them play in dvd set top but some don't. Setting bitrate to dvd-rom doesn't help. all created with same software, same media etc. when look at contents of dvd directory they all look similar - so why do some play and not others? any ideas?

Re: dvd works in pc not settop

Normally this it due to media incompatability with the set top - what is your burner, set top, what media are you using and what program are you using to burn?

Re: dvd works in pc not settop

i'm using an lg 4120b burner, tdk dvd media, panasonic dvd player and clonedvd2 but I have also tried nero and roxio too. Again it's weird because some movies work and others don't but all the same media, program, burner and set top player. I wondered if it was something to do with an autorun feature or something but the disc contents between the ones that don't work and the ones that do work is exactly the same, i.e. same directory structures on dvd.

I would still guess at the media - download something like VSO Inspector and that will tell you the media code. If you download Nero CDSpeed and do a disc quality check, it will show you how good the burn was (normally scan at x4). The quality of media can vary even in one packet.

Re: dvd works in pc not settop

This happens all the time. Different DVD movies, TV series etc. (with menus) react differently to how you rip and transcode (shrink) them. They almost always play back on PC DVD burners, but not always on stand alone players which are less forgiving in some regards. It sounds like a software/user learning problem.

Some complete DVDs can be just plain difficult to copy, while just the "movie" portion is usually easier. Most (maybe 99%) of the problems I still run into come from the menus.

The other side of the coin is that most stand alone players remember certain settings and need to be reset once in a while. - Unplug them from the wall for 20 seconds or so when you run into a problem and see if this helps. It couldn't hurt!

Re: dvd works in pc not settop

I have a similar issue, I backed up using Ritek DL DVD+R disks 3 movies, 1 of them does not play on my sony settop dvd but it does play on my PC, the other two play fine on both PC and settop.
I am using DVDdecrypter v3.4.5.0 ISO read and ISO write. the Burner is a BenQ 1625.
Any help is appreciated.

It has been reported by many people that the quality of DL media is very variable - I guess your experience just proves that!! Personally I am not going to touch DL media until the quality improves and the price comes down!

Re: dvd works in pc not settop

I have to agree with you, I just needed reassurance that I wasn't backing up a movie that had some problems or something like that.
I am tempted to burn it again to see if this time works or if I have a bad extraction.

Thanks,

Or use something like CloneDVD2 and compress it onto a DVD5 - if it works, shows you the movie is copyable - much cheaper than a DL!!
