DVD won't play on home player

I downloaded a full movie and burned it to DVD and it will play on my computer but not on my home player. My home player is a Sony 5 disc; over 5 years old. I have already played several DVD backups on my standalone player and all of these downloads will play on my computer but many times, not on the standalone one. Someone recommended going into msconfig and running Windows on minimum settings; that did not work. I am using TDK DVD+R media with Nero 6.0. These have worked great already. I don't see how these downloads will work on one place but not another; I am unRARing these files down to the video and audio folders--nothing crazy. Please help. Thanks.

Re: DVD won't play on home player

I've had the same problem, some DVDs i burnt will run on my comp but not on my standalone sony 5 disc DVD progessive scan player. It's about 2 years old.

The only reason I see is that my comp has all region free while the dvd standalone don't, regardless of whether you burnt your dvd region-free. I think companies are figuring a way to block the DVD shrink "region-free" mode on certain DVDs.

Re: DVD won't play on home player

I like how you're thinking there. I have played some DVDs without any specified region on the standalone before, so I'm pretty sure mine can handle that---I'm thinking with newer players that will be a concern though.
One other idea I had was that, when I downloaded certain movies, the person who ripped them had deleted some files, so the DVD was looking for certain video streams that were no longer there. My computer didn't mind that, but the standalone didn't like it. I went and re-authored the DVD, leaving only the movie and it still wouldn't play.....but I'm still thinking that could be the problem....incorrectly extracting the DVD files.....

Try using different software.
When I use DVD-lab to author and complie a dvd, it doesn't play on one of my players, when I use diff software there are no problems. Good luck.

Re: DVD won't play on home player

So when you decided to use different software, did you find that the previous program you were using never worked at all? Cause Nero 6.0 works for me when I'm copying a movie.....it just doesn't work sometimes.....but would you still think it safe to assume I should try another program, just because movies won't play some of the time? (I was assuming that, if playback was ever successful, that the program wasn't the issue then....)

I've never encountered problem backing up the original movie on DVD. Course if you steal movie from the internet, then there is no guarantee that the format is in good working order.

Re: DVD won't play on home player

I realize that; when I was able to play the downloaded movie on my computer, I realized it wasn't in good order. I'm concerned about my ability to play it on the standalone.

Re: DVD won't play on home player

Well, I do not think it is worth purchasing additional software for the sole reason of *hoping* that it will make your copies playable. If you have the intentions of using the software just because you want to have other options, then yea I'd buy it.
P.S.- Are these actual DVD-files, or are you converting them to make them DVD's?
If they are actual DVD files, then I would just try a different media first or buy a new dvd player.

Re: DVD won't play on home player

Yes, there are actual DVD files....they come in a .RAR and unzip to a .ISO or .IMG file. If you were to double click on the ISO or RAR, you would get the video and audio folders.....they have the .VOB and .BUP files like normal DVDs do. For grins, I would like to try these DVDs in other DVD players to see if maybe it's just mine, but it's worked before.....I am totally lost on this one. I have tried a few different options with re-authoring the DVD and eliminating any unreferenced material, but that didn't work either......
