detecting incorrect disc size

hiya all, I am using Nero 5.5.9.17 to burn dvds using dvd+r discs but nero is only showing the disc has a capacity of 4.3 gig when in fact it has 4.7 gig capacity? Why is this? This 400 megs or so of missing capacity is causing me to split dvds into 2 dics when i should be able to 4.5 gig movie onto 1 disc? wrote to Nero about this 5 days ago, but no answer. Using win xp pro, compaq presario 5423us, 1.6 g p4, hp dvd writer 200i with firmware updated to the newest one. really need this missing data space. thanx. Lou

There should be an option to allow you to encode to fit on disk like in VCD modes
try selecting that to see if it help you get it all on the disc.

Re: detecting incorrect disc size

DVD manufacturers say their discs have 4.7Gb capacity because they have 4,700,000,000 bytes available in storage. Well DUH! you may say.
However a gigabyte in computing terms is calculated by raising 2 to the power 30.
That means you multiply 2 by 2 thirty times giving 1,073,741,824 bytes. So if you divide 4,700,000,000 by 1,073,741,824 you'll get 4.377. That explains your missing 400 meg!
Incidentally, hard-drive manufacturers quote their product capacities in the same way; a quoted 200Gb capacity hard-drive should be 214,748,364,800 bytes in size. What you really get is 13.73Gb less!!

Regards,

TZ
