Backups now only play in PC drives

I recently replaced my computer's Pioneer DVR-111D with a Lite-On 165H6S and the backups I am making now will not play on my set top dvd player which is an LG DN191H. When I place the Lite-On burned discs into the LG, all I get is a disc error message on my tv, however, if I put the same discs into my desktop or laptop and play them using PowerDVD, they work perfectly.

When I burned backup discs using my old Pioneer drive, they would play just fine on my LG player, it's only since I've changed to the Lite-On drive that the discs I make only play on my computers. I'm still using the same batch of Memorex DVD+R discs that worked fine in my LG when I burned them using my Pioneer. And my Lite-On has the latest firmware and I make sure that the booktype is set to DVD-ROM in Nero7, which is also current along with my DVDfab and DVDshrink.

I'm burning discs on the Lite-On at 6X, rather than the 4X I used with my Pioneer, but that is mainly because Nero only shows the speeds: 6X, 8X, and Maximum for the Lite-On drive and won't let me pick any other speeds. I don't know why that is.

Basically, using the Pioneer I could produce copies that would play on my LG player, but now using my Lite-On and keeping everything else pretty much the same, the discs I make only work in my PCs.

Is there anything I can do to start making backups that I can watch on my TV again?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum

Usually playback problems are due to a low quality media, or to a media burned at the wrong speed.

What discs are you using exactly? Can you post mediacode? Mediacode can be obtained using cd-dvd speed or dvd identifier, both free tools

Anyway memorex media are not the very best available. I suggest to use verbatim (NOT the "pearl white" series)

Re: Backups now only play in PC drives

Thanks for both the warm welcome and quick reply.

DVD Identifier says this about my Memorex discs that I burned:

Disc & Book Type: DVD+R - DVD-ROM
Manufacturer Name: Ritek Corp.
Man ID: Ritek
Media Type ID: R03
Product Rev.: 002
Capacity: 2,295,104 sectors = 4.7gb 4.38GiB
Rec Speeds: 1x-2.4x, 4x, 6x-8x

I tried burning one backup at 2x as well as 6x and both will not play in my set top player but will play in my computer.

Could it be the new Lite-On drive? It's the only thing that has changed in my system and when I was using my old Pioneer my burned Memorex discs worked just fine on my tv player, of course, I was burning them at 4x every time, a speed that Nero no longer shows me.

Re: Backups now only play in PC drives

I can confirm that your problem is due to low quality media. Get rid of ritek discs, and buy some better like verbatim or Taiyo yuden. I also suggest you to burn again your backups on better media, because ritek discs can become unreadable in a very short time.

With your liteon you cna do quality scans of you discs. To see how you can read this guide

If you have time, can you post a scan of your problematic discs?

Re: Backups now only play in PC drives

Lite-on drives frequently have inconsistent, and, at times, very poor performance with Ritek media (irrespective of the brand under which they're sold).

I suggest that you follow geno's advice as to media as Liteys generally love verbs (other than the "pearl white" series which are Riteks).

Re: Backups now only play in PC drives

Thanks for the info and help guys, I appreciate it.

So basically, my Pioneer was less particular towards my cheapie discs so it managed to burn playable backups, whereas my newer Liteon is more particular so the backups it makes can only play on my computer drives?

Also, can you guys figure any reason that Nero7 as well as DVDshrink show my burn speed options as only 6x, 8x, and Max? I used to be able to choose 2x and 4x on my Pioneer but the Liteon seems to only give 6x and 8x, and nothing lower or higher.

Is this also due to the discs?

Thanks!

oh, and I'll post my scans as soon as I have them geno!

Re: Backups now only play in PC drives

Burning speeds for each media are stored in the drive firmware, and can't be changed by a burning software. Each drive have different writing strategies, so the speeds you can find with a pioneer can be different from the speeds for the liteon.

I suggest to check also the media you burned with the pioneer: the liteon drive allows you to make quality scans, so you can do a better comparison between the pioneer- and the liteon-burned media.

Doing scans is a bit time-consuming, but can give important informations on your media.

I also suggest you to read this very informative article posted by Dee

Re: Backups now only play in PC drives

Here's the results from the quality tests for a backup I did with my Pioneer drive and one I did with my Liteon drive, both using memorex media and dvddecrypter, shrink, and nero7.

The first is the Pioneer burned disc, the second is the one burned with the Liteon drive.

Can you post graphs too? Pictures are easier to read

Here are the graphs, the first is from the Pioneer burner, the second from the Liteon.

I would also give ImgBurn a try. It is the best burner out there and it's free. Here's the link. It does booktyping as well.

Re: Backups now only play in PC drives

Well, I took your advice and bought a small spindle of Verbatim DVD+R 16x lightscribe discs that Dvd Identifier said were made by Mitsubishi.

I tried encoding a movie via DVDshrink and burned it at 6x with Nero with booktype set to DVD-ROM.

Again, it plays perfectly on my computer, but also again, it will not play in my LG dvd player.

When I load it it takes forever to read and makes a clicking noise before spitting it out with a "Disc error" message, just like it did with the other Memorex backups I burned with my new liteon drive.

It seems that everything I burned with my Pioneer on the Memorex discs works fine on any DVD drive I play it on. But anything I burn with my new Liteon regardless of if it's on Memorex or Verbatim discs will only work in computer drives and not in dvdplayers.

Anyone know what the problem might be?

Re: Backups now only play in PC drives

Ok, odd update for anyone still reading this thread.

All the discs I've burned with my LiteOn drive, Memorex or Verbatim still do not work on my LG dvd player.

HOWEVER, they all seem to play perfectly fine in my older Sony and Pioneer Players that I have in other rooms of the house. Seems those two drives which are both between 2-3 yrs old have no issue with the discs burned with the LiteOn, whereas the LG I bought about 3 weeks ago can't stand them, and will only accept the Memorex burns from my Pioneer.

Very odd, but at least I have an avenue of action. Guess I'll be taking the LG back to bestbuy tomorrow and getting something else. Too bad since it played DivX.
