For me, it's my Toshiba 1612 dvd-rom drive with J806 firmware.
No drive I had untill now can be compared at reading scratched dvds. Fast as my unlocked Liteons and Nec 3500, except at DL dvds, but without noise and with a very pleasant sound.

NEC ND-3500, great burn quality on +R and a real fun drive to tweak.

For CD burning absolutely my two Sony CDU921S-PR.
For DVD it would be my NEC ND-3500.

Re: Your most favourite drive you ever had.

My first DVD-burner, a LiteOn 401S@811S (think it was €59). It could hardly burn a decent disc, but in between all the coasters and disappointing scans it was so much fun and exciting to try out all the crossflashing and omnipatching. It must have also got me here.

Re: Your most favourite drive you ever had.

NEC 2500 with herries firmware that made it a dual layer drive. I did one of the first dl burns with that thing and it worked, WEEEEEE! free dl upgrade from the tweakers
It was such a refreshing change from my 2 Litey 811's that always had problems burning anything and my Sony 500a that was nice but almost never did 4x to anything.
It wrote amazing quality to just about any crap media I had and still works today if I bother to plug it back in.

Re: Your most favourite drive you ever had.

Another vote for the NEC 3500. It was the first burner that really showed me what a great burn was.

Re: Your most favourite drive you ever had.

I never should have let go of my Lite-On 2410b CD burner. It backed up EVERY game I tried, provided I had the right software. Back in the day it was CD-MATE that did the trick.

Nowadays, I just use NO-CD patches and put my original game disks safely away.

My first BenQ 1620, I had more fun with that drive than any other.
