Toshiba Satellite Optical Drive Problems IMPORTANT

Somehow or another, unintended my optical drive for my Toshiba latop has disappeared. It is no longer available in my computer, and CD/DVD's do not read when inserted in the drive.

There is no problem to the drive physically. I have called Toshiba tech support on the issue and they are clueless. They left me with two decisions:

1.reboot to recovery (last resort, no way- I have more files than people in the United States)
2.find the manufacturer of the optical drive itself. somehow or another, Toshiba could not inform me on the name of the manufacturer of the drive, which I think is a load of crap.

So I'm out looking on my own, trying to find a manufacturer for the Toshiba Satellite P105-s6084 laptop portable.

As mentioned before, a recovery is my last resort, given the fact I am unavailable to back up information on CD. I have also tried system restore, so no need to mention that.

Any help would be tremendously appreciated on how in the WORLD I can find out the name of the manufacturer of the optical drive itself.

Have you already read the Troubleshooting articles posted here?

How did you work that out?

That's why there is something like "backup". If there is no backup, then the data are not important. To sort out system issues, resetting the system to initial installation is common means for troubleshooting.

This is useless. What for? What shall they do? They can't and won't do anything for you as this is an OEM drive without end customer support.

Get a Knoppix or Kanotix CD, boot from that in order to find out if the drive is still capable of reading CD media and in order to find out, what drive is used.
