Sorry for the beginner question: If I set MCC003 to MCC004 there will be two MCC004 rows in my MID table. That's normal if I understand it correctly. One MCC004 will have max. 12X speed, no matter if I set it to 16X. Fortunately when burning I can select 16X too, so the change was successful. Now when I change TTG02 to TYG02 I can burn it at max. 8X speed, even there is 12X and 16X for TYG02 (not a good change BTW, it is much better with the original). In this case ther are also two TYG02s in the MID database, one with 8X max. speed and the other with 16X. What did I wrong?

INFOSMART01 only at 4x?

Hi, I use some nice cheap media for backing up my data. They are DVD-R's INFOSMART01 they are dirt cheap and with nero cd speed I get score's between 94 and 96...
I was just looking through the media codes in MediaCode and rearlised that the original firmware downloaded from the benq site (B7U9 on Benq1620) has the speed set at 8x for these discs but when I burn them I can only burn at 4x. I know that mediacode has sill got problems with this firmware with changing speeds of DVD-R 4x media which do not take effect.
What I am wondering is if it is MediaCode that badly interperates the firmware and thinks that it's at 8x when actually it is only meant to be at 4x or did benq want this media to burn at 8x and actually had the same problem as ALA42 is having with the DVD-R 4x media?
I haven't checked out the 1.4.2 version yet my last flash was with 1.4.1 so maybe this problem has already been solved ...?
Just checked out the changelist and it seems that the only thing that concerns my drive is that you can no longer check other speeds than those chosen by the write methode... was it not possible to burn a disc using the same write methode and just changing the speed before?

Does that mean you can not select 8x speed or does that mean you selected 8x speed and it was burned at 4x ? Does B7T9 behave the same way ?

This is no problem of interpreting the media code table. The same problem is present with B7U9 if the media code names are changed, so the firmware obviously reads the max. speed from the disk and decides not to go higher than 4x on 4x -R disks.

Before you could change the checkboxes, but this change was ignored if higher speeds were selected and the old value was displayed again. The gui was changed so only allowed changes are selectable to remove this point of confusion.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit tool for DVD-Writers

thanks ala42,
1) In the original firmware 8x is selected as default without me changing anything but in nero or other burning programs it only proposes 4x
2) Thanks for the info about the 4x discs, does this mean that these INFOSMART01 discs that I have got can be written at 8x but as the max speed is set to 4x on the discs so the firmware refuses to burn higher?

I'm going to try the B7T9 firmware, I guess some people say they get better results with it but the B7U9 is supposed to like DVD-R better and I've still got quite a few -R discs to use up... next time I'll only buy +R ones.

Try again with B7T9 at least to see if higher speeds are allowed. INFOSMART01 probably is not the best media, so do not be surprised if the 8x burning scans do not look so good.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit tool for DVD-Writers

The Liteon firmware is not very patch friendly when you want to have strategy swapping. They use a high number of tables and for each of them there is a table scanner that has to be patched. They often release new firmwares and drive models using different table structures and different table scanner, so the effort to keep the firmware support uptodate is so high that I have no plans to support strategy swapping for the current Liteon firmwares.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit tool for DVD-Writers

ala42,

Great work and a great tool.

I suggest that you remove the possibilities for changing the speed on drives that not support it (like Samsungs). Grey the fields out or put up a info window saying that direct speed changing is not possible you have to rename the mediacode etc...

I guess by reading this thread that several people including myself have thought that it should be possible to changing the speed directly by ticking the speedboxes.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit tool for DVD-Writers

ala42,

We use the program to make drives recognise MID of our customers (disc producers)
We want to use 2.4x strategy's, is it possible on any drive to chang MID name for 2.4x to the one of our customer?

thanks,

When I understand you right from your other posts, your customers produce blank medias with an new media code name which is of course not supported by any drive firmware. Changeing the media code name to test how this new media works with several burners is possible in principle, but you have to know how to patch the firmware, meaning you have to find out how the firmware is packed, scrambled, decrypted and how checksums work for each drive you want to patch. I can assure you this is a lot of work and you start at zero with each new burner family.

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit tool for DVD-Writers

ala42

Thanks for the info ala42.
We already use your tool and are quite happy with it's capability's.
Neverthelless we would not only like to use this tool for high speeds (8x and up) but also for low speeds.

Can you tell me wether or not any drive has mid info in the 2.4x area of the write strategy thus making a MID swap or change effectively change the 2.4x write strategy?
When I look at for instance a 1640 or 1620 drive the 2.4x checkbox is grey which gives me the idea that there is no info behind MID for 2.4x?
Is this assumption right?

I doubt that only one generic setting is used, my guess is that every drive capable of 2.4x burning has either special setting for each media for this speed or calculates the settings from the 4x settings. So if you see changes after renaming the media code when writing at 4x you should also see changes when writing at 2.4x.
It should be quite easy to verify this theory by just burning some disks at 2.4x with different strategies.

The Benq 1620 firmware has 4 columns in the +R media code table which MCSE interprets as 4x/8x/12x/16x. The meaning of the 8x-16x columns is verified by removing the entries. The first column could be everything as the drive even reports 4x write speed when the entry is cleared.

Hi.

I can't get the download link for MCSE to work — does an alternative one exist?

Thanks,

MediaCodeSpeedEdit V 1.0.4.5 is out.

MediaCodeSpeedEdit V 1.0.4.5 is out. "Matches more drives" .

For the LG 4163 support I have started a discussion and a results thread. This first version has several restrictions, but is a start. See the LG discussion thread for details.
The auto rename feature will make strategy swapping easier for firmwares without lossless swapping support.

Code:
1.0.4.5 10 Apr 2005
        - added support for LG 4163 A104, thanks to TDB, Dee-27 and delta123
        - added support for Cyberhome DX162D-A 140F, thanks to TDB and ccbadd
changing the write strategy does not seam to work for some +R media
speed reducing is not implemented yet
        - added support for 1625 family: BENQ DW1625 BBEA, HP 640c ES04,
          PHILIPS 16LS P1.5
including lossless strategy swapping and read speed patch
        - added support for Liteon 852 PSX3
        - read speed patch for 822 B3LC is now also in the released version
        - added auto rename feature used when no lossless strategy swapping
is supported and list entries are double clicked

I should use the release version from time to time, even when it is late at night ...
Code:
1.0.4.6 10 Apr 2005
        - auto rename was missing in the release version

Re: MediaCodeSpeedEdit tool for DVD-Writers

I'm attempting to use this tool for the first time and i'm having a few difficulties.
Firstly, i have a Benq DW 1620 Pro. I've tried editing both the B7U9 and B7V9 with the same results so far.
At the moment, I only want to change the write strategy for the Skc Co., Ltd to the Sony08D1. I do this using the tool and it appears to change it. I save it as the new firmware and apply it, but when i try to burn something using Nero, it still only shows 4X. None of the other speeds are shown.
I've seen it shown on another thread that this is possible, so i'd like to know what i might be doing wrong!
