If it goes on sale or rebate it may be a good deal, provided, of course, if it is a quality drive.

Any ideas on who builds this drive?

Perhaps the fastest way to find our is to buy one.

Can't you open the box without having to buy?

My wife says that I buy too much computer stuff already, so buying one is out of the question - right now anyhow .

I will see if the good people at CompUSA will let me peek.

At least for the moment the I/O Magic 16x burners are reported to be BenQ drives (as one could guess by looking at the specs and box too).
But I/O Magic usually have more than one OEM so when BTC, Optorite or any other 16x drive shows up which I/O magic can get a good deal on it probably change...

My pitch would be for a Pioneer 108 or NEC 3500, either of which are available for the mid $80s. They clobber the competition.
