DVD+RW RW 8165 (Ricoh) DVD burning issues

Hi,
For the past few months I have begun having major issues with my internal DVD+R burner. Prior to the problems, I had successfully backed up my data numerous times over the course of a year and a half. I had done this using various types of media with few problems.

Unfortunately, for no clear reason, I began having problems (the only slight possibility was could be that my HD broke although I replaced it with an identical model and reinstalled and then reupdated all the original software). For about a month or two I could burn to 33% (exactly) and then receive the "illegal medium" message. Now, I receive that error message before any burning occurs.

I have unsuccessfully tried using nearly every type of DVD+R media on the market (of various speeds, too). I have also successfully re-installed windows again. From what I can tell, my firmware and drivers are as updated as possible.

I should note that I have absolutely no problems watching DVD's, getting data off of a DVD, burning a CD, or listening to music on a CD. I have tried using most of the various burner software although before this issue arose I only used NERO (an older version that came with my computer but I have also tried, unsuccessfully, the newest version).

Also, my computer has 1 gig of ram, 4.73 gigs HD free, ati mobility 9700 and centrino pentium m 1.7.

I have read everything I can find on the subject and tried various fixes to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: DVD+RW RW 8165 (Ricoh) DVD burning issues

Clean the drive, try better media, even forget this OBSOLETE Nero version.
Better use an other tool, even cdburnerxp is better.

Re: DVD+RW RW 8165 (Ricoh) DVD burning issues

chef,
when you say clean the drive, do you mean literally clean the optical laser? how else do i clean the drive - compressed air?

as for the media, i have tried all types (from the best to worst) and none are working anymore.

i will try the other burning tool you recommended but i have already tried a few others and received the same error messages.

Re: DVD+RW RW 8165 (Ricoh) DVD burning issues

chef,
just tried burning with cdburnerxp and here is the error message i received:

CDBurnerXP Pro 3 - Critical
Writing Error: (3) Error occurred writing data to disc.
Unknown error - use extended data for more information (1051).
Error Sense Data: SENSE KEY: 5 ASC: 30 ASCQ: 5

Also, as a side note, the CDBurnerXP reads the DVD fine as the correct media type and as empty.

Re: DVD+RW RW 8165 (Ricoh) DVD burning issues

Could be a connection problem.
Can you run some tests using nero cd dvd speed with the drive?

4.7 GB of free hard drive space doesn't seem like much. You need 15% free to defrag. If your hard drive files are badly fragmented, that could cause burning problems.

Re: DVD+RW RW 8165 (Ricoh) DVD burning issues

yea...ive thought about that too and want to free up more space...

of course that is difficult when my external hd is full and i cant burn dvds...hmmm

anybody else have any thoughts on this extremely perplexing problem? i am starting to think that my dvd+r is slowly dying.

Re: DVD+RW RW 8165 (Ricoh) DVD burning issues

At the end of the log I saw... (Prassi/Veritas driver for win 2K) is that some sort of packet writting SW ??

I have known that to cause problems before, and get a trial of perfect disk v7 it does not need any room to de-frag, I have done a 100GB partition with 400 MB free, did take a long time granted, but did it, best de-fragger.

100GB with only 400mb free - oh well. This probably had freaked and maxxed out the hdd...

Yes, drivers like CDRALW2K.SYS can create issues.

It was when I first joined and had my DVD problems and could not stop downloading stuff

I have 2 100GB partitions that I use for dumping stuff in and encoding/editing from and to, did not check how much room was on them, with a de-frag task that runs every week or so, and going thru the log and saw that it had spent all night doing this partition, because of the lack of room I 'spose

Re: DVD+RW RW 8165 (Ricoh) DVD burning issues

Two questions: 1. Is there firmware for a different Ricoh DVD+R that I could install that would be more up to date than my current firmware (last revised in 2003 or so)? In other words, could I use firmware from a different and newer (albeit similar) burner or would that be inherently dangerous? 2. Could I delete the Prassi/Veritas drivers and reinstall them (or whatever Windows recommends)?

Okay so that is three questions...sorry.

Re: DVD+RW RW 8165 (Ricoh) DVD burning issues

Those cdcreator/roxio drivers can easily interfere other system drivers. Just delete it/them. (CDRALW2K.SYS)

I think there is no similar drive to yours and RICOH is the original manufacturer.

Re: DVD+RW RW 8165 (Ricoh) DVD burning issues

i deleted the cdraww2k and ran perfect disk. now my computer cant find the burner. says it does not exist. the device status is: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

I tried to let windows auto find the driver and it said it could not find a better match. therefore, i still have this issue. CDrawl2k is still sitting in my recycle bin. should i restore it? is there somewhere else i can find the driver?

any other ideas/thoughts?

thanks

Re: DVD+RW RW 8165 (Ricoh) DVD burning issues

almost good news...
i deleted roxio using this tool from another post i read: You have Roxio installed, it clashes with Nero, to remove run this zapper http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/U...oxio-Zap.shtml

the burning started fine and no illegal disk messages occurred!!!

BUT, i am now receiving focus tracker errors. i am going to try a few different things but in the meantime...thoughts?
