I recently purchased an LG GCC-4520B model CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive (firmware V1.00) (52x24x52x16x) and I have been experiencing unsatisfactory DVD-R media reading performance.

For some DVD-R discs, the drive will tend to hang if I ask it to read some files on the disc. Typically, the files are located on the outer edge of the disc. The LED will blink occasionally and the computer will partially hang as it is unable to receive data from the drive. If this does occur, I would guess that maybe 10% of the disc is affected; the rest of the files can be read without problems.

The drive has no problems reading other types of media (CD-R, DVD-RW, etc.) and it seems to write to CD media just fine.

If I take the same DVD-R disc that my drive has problems with and try to read it in a GCC-4480B combo drive (firmware V1.02) it works flawlessly. The disc also works fine in the DVD recorder that it was originally written in (Toshiba SD-R5002).

Does this sound like something that could be fixed in a latter firmware revision, or is it something I could fix (well, without using better media, heh).

i have a similar problem with my GCC-4520B drive. my problem is simply, it can't read DVD+R that i wrote in another drive that writes to DVD+R. I don't know if there is a solution for that? like for example if i can flash this drive GCC-4520B so that it can read DVD+R.
