| DURABILITY, NEC or LG? So... It seems that LG and NEC have lots of supporters! It seems that the quality of written disc is no longer a good topic to discuss anymore... For me, I think nice brand's DVDs will be good enough. This is not to be argued.And... I've thought of another question.. Whose durability is higher? NEC or LG? Would NEC and LG users please give some comments? Thank u! ![]() |

| Re: DURABILITY, NEC or LG? The more important question should be like this: "How many discs am I going to burn in the first year and in the next year?" Unless you are going to burn 10,000 disks each month, I don't think you should worry about durability of drives. Retail LG GSA-4120B cost just US$84 from Newegg.com. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...136-037&depa=1 Drives become unusable mostly by user mistakes. There are exceptions though that occur mainly due to mistakes and lack of better quality control on the part of manufacturers. Other than those, it's extremely unlikely that a modern DVD writer from LG or NEC could go bad or dead after burning just a few hundred blank disks. If they are that bad, you should use only HDDs. Seagate and Samsung HDDs usually withstand many years of usage under 24x7 server environment. The latest Seagate SCSI 10K RPM 10K.7 series should do especially well.

| Re: DURABILITY, NEC or LG? I was confused. Thought you were another person, sorry. I've used many LG writers, many Samsung writers, many Yamaha, Teac, Plextor, Matsushita writers, many Lite-On writers, many NEC writers, and so on. Currently, I own 9 Lite-On writers and several NEC writers in addition to drives from other brands. The one thing I don't worry about is drive durability. Unless faulty, it's not likely to be overused. Of course, any CPU can literally burn if used in certain conditions and any drive can explode, not necessarily chemically, if treated in certain ways.

| Re: DURABILITY, NEC or LG? I have had one old, old, NEC 4x CD-ROM drive that would ocassionaly return bad data when reading. Games wouldn't install off the drive, and this one game I was playing that was reading audio data off the CD, it would sound fine for a while, play back about a second or two of static, then continue fine again. I haven't used that drive in years, but I suppose now it was bad from the start. I remember the front bezel cover being on a hinge and flipping downwards when the tray opened out. Other than that, I really haven't had any drive problems. The LG 16x burner I bought in late 2001 is still working well. ![]() |
