Dual layer recording?

Guys (and girls),

In reference to this news article.
http://www.cdfreaks.com/news/8135

Does anyone know why it's only 8.5gb and not 9.4 like a "normal" DVD?

It's kind of disapointing because this means 1:1 backups won't be possible on DVD's which have been filled with extra data.

Anyone know why - or maybe it's the whole 1000 / 1024 thing and it's muddled up?

dhc014:

I find it kind of odd that the manufacturers would quote the smaller (more logical) size.
Traditionally they quote the biggest figure they can - are you positive about this?

(if so, very cool, my 105 will so be sold if they come out soon)

It seems to be a common misconception that a dual layer DVD holds 2x the size of a single layer DVD. The true size for both a pressed dual layer DVD and dual layer DVD+R are 7.95 GB (= 8.5 x 10^9 bytes).
Check out the DVDdemystified's FAQ if you want more information:

Actually to be correct a dual layer DVD contains
8.5 GB (gigabytes), ie 8.5 x 10^9 bytes. The
'gig' and 'BB' units on that page do not exist,
and although the author gives a link to the
correct definition of GB in 7.2 he apparently does
not want to use it elsewhere. Strange.

Left me re-phrase all of this, sorry.

As far as I was aware a pressed DVD was at least 9gb - I could've sworn I put one in my machine and it came up as 9gb - perhaps I'm wrong.

What I want to know is if an 8.5gb dual layer DVD can burn a 1:1 image of a real pressed DVD - this will send DVD Shrink straight to bankrupcy (doesn't bother me, I'd love to make 1:1's of my favourite movies and not damage the original)

- Scott.

Lets get one thing straight first, a dual layered DVD is the same as a pressed dual layered DVD. Secondly, a DL DVD can hold 7.95 GB of data, the number seen on the DVD isn't in computer GB. I have no idea why they wouldn't put the amount it can hold in computer GB so don't ask. Go here for more information.

AbRASiON, considering what I just said it should work, but I don't know of any official burner that can burn DL DVDs at the moment. According to some other posts if you have an 8x burner there is a minor possibility that you can burn DL DVDs.
