what about your video card?
and is it running as master or slave? Some drives perform badly when running as slave.

Well... I haven't looked into this too hard, but here's a couple suggestions:

1. Don't run anything in the background. Sometimes Windows sets up tasks (automatic scandisk/defrag, etc) to be run at certain times of day. One of those could be getting in the way too.

2. You have your IDE chains full, does that motherboard have a RAID controller? If so, move the HD over to that, it should help a little.

3. Check for the latest BIOS (from Asus) and VIA Hyperion drivers here.

4. Make sure DMA is on, search the forums if you don't know how.

5. Check for new video drivers. ATI's video drivers are a little quirky, and the newer Catalyst 3.0 seems to have fixed some outstanding issues with all Radeon cards.

EDIT I forgot to mention to make sure to update your DVD software to the latest version (I think PowerDVD is at version 4 aka XP, not sure about WinDVD) /EDIT

Good luck!
