Help... Burner Sooo Slow!

Hey ---

My New External Buslink 48X CD Burner still takes 18-20 minutes per CD...

Here is my story:
Sony Vaio Notebook (3 years old)
OS Windows XP Home ("Clean Install" in Jan)
Pent III
500 mhz
6 gb HD w/ 2gb free space
Using an Adaptec USB2 (Dual) Adapter Card
Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum (w/new updates)

Basically... I select 40x (The highest offered)... The "Actual" Write speed hardly gets above 4x, 5x, or 6x .... it may jump up to 25x or 30x for a second or two... but stays at the lowers speeds for 99% of the burn... takes 18-20min for a full 80min cd...

I have checked w/companies and they say that both the USB2 card and the Burner are installed properly... I updated all my BIOS stuff when I moved up to XP from Win 98 (Clean Install)... Sony says no new BIOS needed...

IDEA's PLEASE... Thoughts on the subject.... Can this work or it is pointless.... This is sooo frustrating... Anything I can do to get faster burns????

THANKS!

Is your USB-2 driver installed and functioning? In device manager, you should see an entry under USB that says something like "enhanced" host controller. Using a USB-2 compliant cable? What read speeds do you get from the burner?

Device manger has all the appropriate settings indicated... "Enhanced Host Controller (B1)" or something like that... Also... The Buslink CD-RW has an indicator which identifies that it is recognizing a USB-2....

The cable is the USB-2 cable out of the box...

Not sure if "Read Speed" is same as "Write Speed" but... the "Actual Write Speed" is varies from 4x-6x...with very occasional jumps to 25x or 30x for a second or two... total time still 18-20min...

Thanks for you response.... let me know if u have any other thoughts...

Put a full data disc in the burner and run a read speed test, use CDSpeed if you like, (transfer rate test), see how fast the burner will read. If it reads at it's rated speed then you know it's not the connection.
