If the cds aren't copy protected just use the cd copy function in nero and burn at low speed (say 8x) on good quality media to ensure reasonable quality sound.

You could, of course, use a specialised audio program such as feurio or exact audio copy if you want very high quality copies, but this will take you a lot longer and, let's face it, if you're only going to play them in the car, the sound isn't going to be concert hall quality anyway.

After having a quick look though the forum, I found that EAC is meant to give better sound, is this true?

EAC doesn't give better "sound".
Feurio doesn't give better "sound".

They only give better sound if the disc is in bad condition, scratched, or reader is poor...

With EAC properly configured you know if your extraction has been perfect. (It rips twice and compare WAVs depending on reader).

With Feurio and a reader that shows C2-error information, you know the extraction has been perfect if no C2-error is showed.
(If there are C2 errors maybe it's perfect, maybe it's not, because 2 out of 3 kind of C2 errors are correctable by hardware.)

You can extract WAVs from copies and original CDs and compare the WAVs with EAC "Compare WAVs" tool.
You'll see that almost all dics are digital perfect. Then, if they sound different it's a matter of CDRs quality or compatibility.

Feurio won't take you any longer than Nero (in fact it's easier and faster), and EAC usually is a bit slower extracting.

The difference is Feurio is a professional program and Nero is a toy with bugs.

just use Feurio and EAC for audio.....
(rip slow and do not burn to fast to be sure for a good copy)
for extra info look at this forum or on the websites of the software

@ minix
I wasn't suggesting nero for ripping and then re-mastering. I was suggesting a straight cd copy (since the back-ups are only intended for use in the car).

mattyp,

a quick look, you say ?

Well, then it's time to get to the heart of the matter.
And I wonder how ppl can judge of anything w/o even seeing or trying a product

I only trust my own eyes, ears, mind, heart and soul.

Rather restrained for you on this topic, BoSkin. LOL

mattyp,

BoSkin is a huge fan of feurio. Don't wind him up or you'll get about another 20 posts, at least, from him, on the issue (OK an exaggeration but only a slight one.) LOL
You may, however, find that he's right.

If you want high quality audio copies, rather than the simple copies I suggested that you make with nero, try both Feurio and EAC and judge for yourself.

But, there's no problem with that.
Straight CD copy should sound the same as if it was remastered.

If the original is in good condition, there shouldn't be any read error, so it's the same wether you copy with Nero, Feurio or EAC. Same quality.

I only want to remark that Feurio won't take any longer than Nero.
Feurio extracts in "burst mode" like Nero. It can copy on the fly like Nero.
The advantage is that if you have a drive that reports C2 errors, you'll know that you make a perfect copy if no C2-error is showed.
That has another advantage: you'll know the condition of your CDs. If there are C2 errors better making a copy of that CD.
(It has to be noted that some readers are very "sensitive" (bad), and give C2 errors too easily).

3 years for me.
Since version 1.21.
It solved all the problems with Nero 4 and CDRWin 3.6x.
It's easy to say: Feurio is much better programmed than Nero. It's done by only one person while Nero is made by a bunch of people with less level than Jens.
Feurio, clean programming.
Nero, "party" programming.

Well, sorry for my bad English.
I don't even know what it means...

My thoughts are already explained in the thread "Best software for audio":
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread....threadid=49570

Nero is too big, too many programmers, to maintain an acceptable level of bugs...
Too many people make an average programming level less than Fangmeier.
It's becoming bloatware, like EasyCD.

Nero is wider, but Feurio is clearly better at what it is supposed to do.
This is my opnion, but I never got an answer in that thread of why Nero could be better than Feurio.
